Driving Your Vehicle

Proper Braking Practice

WARNING

  • Whenever leaving the vehicle or parking, always set the parking brake as firmly as possible and fully place the vehicle's transmission in the Park position. Vehicles not fully secured in Park with the parking brake applied are at risk of unintended movement and may cause injury to yourself or others.
  • Always make sure the parking brake is fully applied when parking all vehicles to prevent unintended vehicle movement that may injure passengers or pedestrians.
  • After parking the vehicle, make sure the parking brake is released and that the parking brake indicator is off before starting to drive.
  • When driving through water, the brakes may get wet. They may also get wet after the vehicle is washed. Wet brakes can be dangerous! Your vehicle will not stop as quickly when the brakes are wet. Wet brakes may cause the vehicle to pull to one side. To dry the brakes, lightly apply the brake pedal until braking performance returns to normal, while keeping the vehicle under control at all times. If braking performance does not return to normal, stop as soon as it is safe to do so and have the vehicle inspected at a professional workshop. Kia recommends contacting an authorized Kia Dealer/Service Partner.
  • Do not drive down a slope with the vehicle in neutral. This is extremely dangerous. Always keep the vehicle in gear, use the brakes to decelerate, then shift to a lower gear so that engine braking helps maintain a safe speed.
  • Do not "ride" the brake pedal. Keeping your foot on the brake pedal while driving can be dangerous, as it may cause the brakes to overheat and lose their effectiveness. It also increases wear on brake system components.
  • If a tire goes flat while driving, apply the brake gently and keep the vehicle pointed straight ahead while you slow down. When you are moving slowly enough to do so safely, steer off the road and stop in a safe place.
  • Be careful when parking on a hill. Firmly apply the parking brake and place the shift lever in P (Park). If your vehicle is facing downhill, turn the front wheels toward the curb so that the vehicle will not roll. If your vehicle is facing uphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb to keep the vehicle from rolling. If there is no curb or other conditions require preventing the vehicle from rolling, chock the wheels.
  • Under some conditions, the parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This most often occurs when snow or ice accumulates around the rear brakes, or if the brakes are wet. If there is a risk that the parking brake may freeze, apply it only temporarily while placing the shift lever in P (Park) and chock the rear wheels so that the vehicle cannot roll. Then release the parking brake.
  • Do not hold the vehicle on a hill with the accelerator pedal. This may cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or the parking brake.
