Speedometer Gear

GENERAL INFORMATION

The speedometer gear is located next to the right axle shaft. Removal

PROCEDURE

1. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on stands.

2. Loosen the union nut and disconnect the speedometer cable.

3. Remove the bolt.

4. Remove the gear and the O-ring.

5. If necessary, drive out the pin, remove the gear and the thrust washer (arrows indicate the pin and the O-ring).

6. Inspect all parts.

7. Replace the O-ring.

8. If the thrust washer must be replaced, note that the thickness of the new washer must be equal to the thickness of the old one.

9. If defects are found in the speedometer gear, also check the condition of the drive gear in the transmission.

10. To replace the transmission drive gear, the transmission must be disassembled and the differential removed. These operations must be performed at a service center.

Installation

PROCEDURE

1. Assemble the gear and press in the new pin.

2. Replace the O-ring, install the gear on the transmission and tighten the bolt.

3. Connect the speedometer cable and tighten the nut.

4. Lower the vehicle.
