Automatic transmission
GENERAL INFORMATION
Automatic transmissions are installed on vehicles with 1.4 and 1.6 L engines. The transmission consists of a torque converter, a planetary gear and multi-disc hydraulic clutches and servo brakes. The planetary gear transmits engine torque at various gear ratios. Pressurized transmission fluid engages and disengages a number of hydraulic clutches and servo brakes in the planetary gear, which changes the gear ratio. Fluid pressure in the system is maintained by a separate pump. The transmission is controlled by the selector lever, which has 6 positions. In the D position, automatic shifting through 4 forward speeds is provided. A kick-down device automatically shifts the transmission to a lower speed (higher gear ratio) when the throttle is fully opened. In selector position 2, the vehicle can move at speeds corresponding to the first two gear ratios, and in position 1 only at the first gear ratio. Do not shift the transmission into positions 1 and 2 if the vehicle speed exceeds 110 km/h. The selector has an overdrive switch (for engine braking or overload). Under normal driving conditions this switch must be in the ON position, and when driving downhill or uphill it must be in the OFF position. Any transmission repair must be performed at an authorized service center.
Removal
PROCEDURE
1. Raise the vehicle and support it on stands.
2. Move the selector to N.
3. Remove the front wheels.
4. Drain the coolant and tighten the drain plug.
5. Remove the battery.
6. On GE16DE vehicles, remove the air filter duct.
7. Disconnect the wires from the double switch and the solenoid.
8. Disconnect the kick-down cable from the throttle.
9. Remove the nut and pull the cable out of the bracket and clips.
10. Disconnect the cable from the transmission lever, remove the clip and take off the cable.
11. Clamp the coolant hoses, unscrew the fittings and disconnect the hoses.
12. Disconnect the axle shafts (see subsection 10.2).
13. Remove the exhaust pipe.
14. Remove the starter motor.
15. Remove the transmission lower cover and remove the torque converter bolts by rotating the crankshaft.
16. Support the engine with a hoist or raise it with a jack.
17. Position a lifting platform and support the transmission.
18. Remove the nut and the through bolt of the rear engine mount.
19. Remove the three bolts and the bracket.
20. Remove the stopper ring.
21. Remove the nut and the through bolt of the left engine mount.
22. Remove the three bolts, the mount and the insulators.
23. Secure the torque converter.
24. Remove the transmission mounting bolts, marking the location of each bolt first (the bolts are of different lengths).
25. Make sure all necessary parts are disconnected and will not interfere with removal.
26. Carefully move the platform to the left and roll it out with the transmission.
27. Remove the dowels if they are loose.
Installation
PROCEDURE
1. Install in the reverse order.

2. When installing the torque converter, check the distance from the bolt holes to the transmission mating surface (A). It must be at least 21.1 mm.
3. Replace the axle shaft seals and adjust the kick-down cable.
Disassembly: Repair by yourself is not recommended, as it requires high qualification and special tools. A vehicle with a faulty transmission should be taken to a service center for diagnosis of fault codes and repair. The transmission may only be removed after reading the diagnostic codes.
