Child seat installation, general information

~3min read

Installing a child seat is not permitted in some seating positions. The diagram on the next page shows where a child seat can be installed.

The child seat types listed may not be available. Before using another child seat, check with the manufacturer whether it can be installed.

Make sure the child seat or the child's legs do not prevent the front seat from locking correctly. See the "Front seat" section in Chapter 1. Make sure the child seat is installed in the vehicle so that there is no risk of it coming loose from its base. If the head restraint had to be removed, make sure it is stored properly so that it cannot be thrown upward in the event of sudden braking or a collision.

A child seat should always be secured in the vehicle, even when not in use, so that it cannot be thrown forward in the event of sudden braking or a collision.

In the front seat

Carrying a child in the front passenger seat is subject to different regulations in different countries. Familiarise yourself with the applicable laws and follow the instructions shown in the diagram on the next page.

Before installing a child seat in this position (if permitted):

  • lower the seat belt as far as possible;
  • move the seat as far back as possible;
  • tilt the backrest slightly from the vertical axis (by about 25 degrees);
  • on vehicles equipped with this feature, raise the seat cushion as far as possible.

In such cases, raise the front head restraint as far as possible until it no longer touches the child seat (see the paragraph "Front head restraints" in chapter 1).

After installing the child seat, the seat may be moved forward if necessary (to leave sufficient space behind for passengers or other child seats). A rear-facing child seat must not touch the dashboard or be in the fully forward position.

Do not change the settings again after installing the child seat.

RISK OF DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY: before installing a child seat on the front passenger seat, make sure the front passenger airbag is correctly deactivated (see the "Child safety: deactivating and activating the front passenger airbag" section in Chapter 1).

In the rear side seat

The carrycot is installed across the direction of travel and occupies at least two seating positions.

Position the child's head on the side opposite the door.

Move the vehicle front seat fully forward to install the child seat facing rearward, then move it fully rearward, but so that it does not touch the child seat.

To ensure the safety of a child seated facing forward, do not move the seat in front of the child further rearward than the middle position of the seat rail, do not tilt the backrest at too great an angle (maximum 25°), and raise the seat to its highest position.

In all cases, remove the rear head restraint on which the child seat is placed (see the "Rear head restraints" section in Chapter 3). Do this before installing the child seat.

Check that the forward-facing child seat rests against the vehicle seat backrest.

Rear centre position

Check that the seat belt is suitable for securing your child seat. Contact an authorised Renault dealer.

Do not install a child seat fitted with supports on the rear centre seat. RISK OF DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY.

It is best to install the child seat on a rear seat.
