Driver's and front passenger's airbags

~1min read

The vehicle may be equipped with a driver's and front passenger's airbag.

The word "Airbag" on the steering wheel and dashboard (airbag deployment zone A) and, depending on the vehicle version, a label in the lower corner of the windscreen indicate that this equipment is fitted in the vehicle.

Each airbag system consists of:

  • driver's airbag with gas generator, mounted in the steering wheel, and passenger's airbag mounted in the dashboard on the passenger side;
  • electronic control module of the system, which controls the electric igniter of the gas generator;
  • one warning lampon the
    instrument panel.

The Airbag system works on the principle of pyrotechnics, which is why heat and smoke (which are not a sign of fire) are released when the airbag deploys, and a loud bang is heard. Immediate deployment of the airbag may cause abrasions to the skin or other unpleasant effects.

Operating principle:

Zasada działania

The system operates only when the ignition is switched on.

In the event of a severe frontal impact, the airbags are rapidly inflated with gas, which cushions the impact of the driver's head and chest against the steering wheel and of the passenger's head and chest against the dashboard. After fulfilling its function, the gas is automatically released from the airbag to allow quick exit from the vehicle after a collision.
