Hill start assist

~1min read

The system assists the driver when starting on a slope (depending on the angle of incline).

It prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards on a slope by automatically applying the brakes when the driver releases the brake pedal to press the accelerator pedal.

System operation

The system only operates when the gear selector lever is in a position other than neutral (a position other than N or P on vehicles with automatic transmission) and the vehicle is stationary (brake pedal pressed).

The system holds the vehicle for approximately 2 seconds. The brakes are then gradually released (the vehicle starts moving, depending on the slope of the road).

The hill start assist cannot completely prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards in all situations (very steep slopes, etc.). In all cases, the driver can apply the brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards. The hill start assist should not be used after the vehicle has been stationary for a long time: in that case, use the brake pedal. The function is not intended to hold the vehicle stationary permanently. If necessary, press the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. On slippery or low-grip surfaces and/or on slopes, the driver should exercise particular caution.

Risk of serious injury.
