Interpreting XR25 bar graphs

~17min read
CONSIGNES Les calculateurs qui ne gèrent que la fonction

NOTES Control units that only manage the seat belt pretensioner function do not have an XR25 diagnosis (check to be performed at the XRBAG).

Make sure the XR25 tool is not the cause of the fault by trying to communicate with a control unit on another vehicle.

Check that the ISO interface is set to position S8, that you are using the latest XR25 cartridge version, and that the correct access code is entered.

Check the battery voltage and carry out the necessary repairs to obtain a compliant voltage (10.5 volts < battery voltage < 16 volts).

Check for the presence and condition of the airbag fuse.

Check the ECU connector connection and the condition of its terminals.

Check that the ECU is correctly supplied:

  • Disconnect the airbag control unit and fit the XRBAG 30-pin adapter.
  • Check and confirm the presence of + APC between the terminals marked ground and + APC.
Check that the diagnostic socket is correctly supplied:
  • + AVC on pin 16.
  • Earth on pin 5.

Check the continuity and insulation of the diagnostic connector / airbag control unit link lines:

  • Between the terminal marked L and pin 15 of the diagnostic connector.
  • Between the terminal marked K and pin 7 of the diagnostic connector.
Check that the diagnostic connector is correctly powered: - + AVC on pin 16.

- Ground on pin 5.

Check the continuity and insulation of the diagnostic connector / airbag control unit link lines: - Between the terminal marked L and pin 15 of the diagnostic connector.

- Between the terminal marked K and pin 7 of the diagnostic connector.

AFTER REPAIR Once communication is established, deal with any fault bar graphs that are lit.

  • Condition / position of the fuse.
  • Condition and tightness of the battery terminals.

dEF

INSTRUCTIONS None

The dEF display on the XR25 tool indicates minimum storage of 2 of the 3 faults declared by the display, and the bar graph is flashing.

Action:

  • Battery charge check.
  • Charging circuit check.
  • Check the tightness and condition of the battery terminals.
  • Condition of the connectors at the control unit.
  • Condition of the control unit ground.
  • Condition / position of the fuse.

AFTER REPAIR Erase the control unit memory using command G0**.

NOTES Never take measurements on the igniter lines with any device other than the XRBAG.

Lock the control unit using command G80* on the XR25 tool.

Switch off the ignition and remove the 2 steering wheel airbag mounting screws.

Check that it is correctly connected.

Disconnect the steering wheel airbag and connect an inert igniter to the igniter connector.

Switch on the ignition and carry out a check with the XR25 tool.

Replace the airbag module if the fault has become stored (fault no longer currently present).

Ignition off, disconnect then reconnect the clock spring connector.

Work on the connectors if left bar graph 5 becomes lit and flashing.

Be sure to use the XRBAG tool to measure resistance at point C2 of the driver airbag circuit.

If the value obtained is not correct, replace the clock spring.

Reconnect the clock spring, disconnect the control unit connector and fit the 30-pin adapter.

Be sure to use the XRBAG tool to measure resistance on the cable marked B of the adapter.

If the value obtained is not correct, check the connectors at the 30-pin connector (pins 10 and 11) and replace the wiring if necessary.

If the checks carried out have not revealed a fault, replace the airbag control unit (see the "help" chapter for this procedure).

Reconnect the driver airbag igniter and refit the airbag module to the steering wheel.

AFTER REPAIR Erase the control unit memory using command G0** then switch off the ignition.

Carry out a check with the XR25 tool and, if no fault is present, unlock the control unit using command G81*.

Destroy the airbag module if it has been replaced (tool Elé. 1287).

INSTRUCTIONS None

Lock the control unit using command G80* on the XR25 tool.

Check the condition of the warning lamp bulb.

Ensure continuity of the link between the warning lamp and pin 8 of the 30-pin connector.

Ensure 12 volts is present at the warning lamp.

If the checks carried out have not revealed any fault, disconnect the control unit connector and fit the XRBAG 30-pin adapter. Use the XRBAG in its function for testing the warning lamp on the instrument panel, using the grey cable of the adapter.

If the warning lamp can be lit using the XRBAG, replace the airbag control unit (refer to the "help" chapter for this procedure).

If the warning lamp cannot be controlled, repeat the checks described above.

Warning lamp on with ignition on (APC)

Lock the control unit using command G80* on the XR25 tool.

Ensure the link between the warning lamp and pin 8 of the 30-pin connector is isolated from earth.

If the checks carried out have not revealed a fault, replace the airbag control unit (see the "help" chapter for this procedure).

INSTRUCTIONS None

This left bar graph 14 shows the locked state of the control unit.

When lit, all firing circuits are inhibited, preventing deployment of the airbags and seat belt pretensioners.

This bar graph is normally lit in 2 cases:

  • The control unit is new (it is sold locked).
  • The lock command of the control unit was used with the XR25 tool during work on the vehicle (G80*).

AFTER REPAIR Erase the control unit memory using command G0** then switch off the ignition.

Carry out a check with the XR25 tool and, if no fault is present, unlock the control unit using command G81*.

CONSIGNES Sans

INSTRUCTIONS None

This bar graph is normally lit in the following case:
  • An impact has been detected.
  • A fault was present in the control unit memory before the impact.
  • This present fault was indicated by the fault warning lamp lighting before the impact.

Left bargraph 14 can therefore explain why an airbag or seat belt pretensioner did not deploy.

Refer to Techline if this bargraph is lit under other conditions (no fault, no impact, etc.).

AFTER REPAIR Erase the control unit memory using command G0** then switch off the ignition.

Carry out a check with the XR25 tool and, if no fault is present, unlock the control unit using command G81*.
