Stop and start function
This system reduces fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
When the vehicle starts, the system is activated automatically.
While driving, the system stops the engine (standby mode) when the vehicle comes to a stop (traffic jam, traffic light, etc.).
System operating conditions
The engine goes into standby mode if:
- the vehicle has moved since its last stop;
- the gearbox is in neutral;
- the clutch pedal is released;
and
- the vehicle speed is below 3 km/h.
Do not drive your vehicle when the engine is in standby (the indicator

appears on the instrument panel).
The warning light
appears on the instrument panel
and warns you that the engine is going into standby mode.
The vehicle's equipment remains operational while the engine is stopped.
The engine restarts as soon as you press the clutch pedal to select a gear.
Specific to vehicles with electric parking brake
When the engine is put into standby mode (the indicator light
appears on the instrument panel), the electric parking brake does not apply automatically.
Before leaving the vehicle, you must switch off the ignition by pressing the engine stop button (refer to the "Starting and stopping the engine" section).
Automatic engine restart specifics
Under certain conditions, the engine may restart without any action on your part to ensure your safety and comfort.
This can happen in particular when:
- the outside temperature is too low or too high (below approximately 0°C or above approximately 30°C);
- the "see clearly" function is activated (refer to the "automatic air conditioning" section in chapter 3);
- the battery is not sufficiently charged;
- the vehicle speed is above 7 km/h;
- the brake pedal is pressed repeatedly or the braking system requires assistance;
- ...
With the engine in standby mode, brake assistance is no longer operational.
Conditions preventing engine stop
Certain conditions prevent the system from putting the engine into standby mode, in particular:
- reverse gear is engaged;
- the engine hood is not locked;
- the driver's door is not closed;
- the driver's seat belt is not fastened;
- the outside temperature is too low or too high (below approximately 0°C or above approximately 30°C);
- the battery is not sufficiently charged;
- the difference between the interior temperature of the vehicle and the automatic air conditioning set point is too great;
- the "see clearly" function is activated (refer to the "automatic air conditioning" section in chapter 3);
- the engine coolant temperature is too low;
- the automatic particulate filter cleaning is in progress;
or
- ...
The warning light
appears on the instrument panel
and warns you that engine standby mode is not available.
Special cases
- System active, engine stopped (traffic jam, stopped at a traffic light...): if the driver gets out of the seat or unbuckles the seat belt and opens the driver's door, the ignition switches off and, depending on the vehicle, the electric parking brake applies automatically.
To restart and reactivate the Stop and Start system, press the start button (refer to the "starting and stopping the engine" section).
- In the event of engine stall, if the system is active, fully depress the clutch pedal to restart.

Deactivating and activating the function
Press switch 1 to deactivate the function. The message "Stop-Start deactivated" appears on the instrument panel and the indicator light 2 integrated in the switch comes on.
Press again to reactivate the system.
The message "Stop-Start activated" appears on the instrument panel and the indicator light 2 integrated in switch 1 goes out.
The system reactivates automatically each time the vehicle is started by pressing the start button (refer to the "starting and stopping the engine" section).
Before leaving the vehicle, you must switch off the ignition by pressing the engine stop button (refer to the "Starting and stopping the engine" section).
Operating faults
When the message "Stop-Start to be checked" appears on the instrument panel, together with the indicator light 2 integrated in switch 1 coming on, the system is deactivated.
Consult a Renault dealer.
