Operating faults
The following tips will help you carry out a quick, temporary repair. For safety, consult a Brand Representative as soon as possible.
| Using the RENAULT card |
POSSIBLE CAUSES |
WHAT TO DO |
| The RENAULT card does not work to unlock or lock the doors. |
Card battery worn out. |
Replace the battery. You can still lock/unlock and start your vehicle (refer to the "Locking, unlocking the openings" sections in chapter 1 and "Starting, switching off the engine" in chapter 2). |
| Use of devices operating on the same frequency as the card (mobile phone, etc.) |
Stop using the devices or use the key built into the card (refer to the "Locking, unlocking the openings" section in chapter 1). |
| Vehicle located in an area with strong electromagnetic radiation. |
Vehicle battery discharged
Use the key built into the card (refer to the "Locking, unlocking the openings" section in chapter 1). |
| The instrument panel warning lights are dim or do not come on, and the starter motor does not turn. |
Battery terminals loose, disconnected or corroded. |
Tighten them, reconnect them or clean them if they are corroded. |
| Battery discharged or faulty |
Connect another battery to the faulty battery. Refer to “Battery: troubleshooting” in chapter 5, or replace the battery if necessary. |
Do not push the vehicle if the steering column is locked.
| The engine does not start |
Starting conditions not met. |
Refer to “Starting, stopping the engine” in chapter 2. |
| The RENAULT "hands-free" card does not work. |
Insert the card into the card reader to start. |
Refer to “Starting, stopping the engine” in chapter 2.
| The engine will not switch off. |
Card not detected. |
Insert the card into the card reader. |
| Electronic fault. |
Press the start button five times quickly. |
| The steering column remains locked. |
Steering wheel locked. |
Turn the steering wheel while pressing the engine start button (refer to “Starting the engine” in chapter 2). |
| Bubbling in the coolant reservoir. |
Mechanical fault: cylinder head gasket damaged. |
Switch off the engine. |
Contact a Brand Representative.
| Smoke from under the bonnet. |
Short circuit or leak in the cooling system. |
Stop, switch off the ignition, move away from the vehicle and contact a Renault dealer. |
| The oil pressure warning light comes on: when cornering or braking |
|
| The level is too low. |
Add engine oil (refer to “Engine oil level - Topping up, filling” in chapter 4). |
| takes a long time to go out or stays on when accelerating |
Low oil pressure. |
Stop and call a Brand Representative. |
| White smoke from the exhaust. |
This is not necessarily a fault: the smoke comes from the regeneration of the particulate filter. |
Refer to “Specifics of diesel versions” in chapter |
| The steering becomes stiff. |
Engine overheating. |
Consult a Renault dealer. |
The engine is overheating. The coolant temperature gauge is in the warning zone and the warning light lights up. |
Cooling fan fault. |
Stop the vehicle, switch off the engine and call a Brand Representative. |
| Coolant leaks |
Check the coolant reservoir: it must contain coolant. If it is empty, consult a brand representative as soon as possible. |
| Vibrations. |
Tyres under-inflated, unbalanced or damaged. |
Check the tyre pressures; if this is not the cause, have their condition checked by a brand representative. |
Radiator: In the event of a significant coolant loss, never top up with cold coolant when the engine is very hot. After any work on the vehicle that required draining the cooling system, even partially, it must be refilled with a new, correctly proportioned mixture. Remember that only a product approved by our technical departments must be used.
