Description

EPB is an electronic parking brake. EPB differs from existing parking systems, which are pedal-operated or lever-type. The EPB system sends a signal to the ECU when the driver presses the EPB switch. The ECU operates the EPB actuator, consisting of geared motors. Braking force is generated when the motor pulls the cable connected to the brake system. The EPB module is one of the components of the EPB system. It monitors the signals of various sensors in the system, performs self-diagnosis, and controls the EPB system with programmed logic. Main function
  1. Static Braking Mode: It monitors the operating state and release conditions of the vehicle when stopped.
    1. Operating conditions: Pull the EPB switch regardless of the ignition ON/OFF status and with the brake pedal depressed. (Pull)
      A. Vehicle speed <= 6 km/h
    2. Release condition: Press the EPB switch with the ignition on and the brake pedal depressed (pushed).
  2. Dynamic Brake Function (DBF): DBF is a braking function during driving. It can control the EPB system and apply it while the vehicle is moving. This function is used when foreign objects get between the brake pedal and the brake hydraulic line, and the brake cannot operate.
    1. Operating conditions: It operates only when the vehicle speed is above 6 km/h and the EPB switch is pulled.
    2. Release condition: Pressing the EPB switch cancels the condition.
    3. Principle of Operation
      A. ESC system is normal: EPB requests brake pressure from the ESC system.
      B. ESC system is abnormal: EPB applies the parking brake to reduce vehicle speed.
    4. Feature: The anti-lock brake system operates when the wheels lock. The warning lamp on the instrument panel flashes during emergency braking.
  3. DAR (Drive Away Release): For driver convenience, the EPB is released automatically when the driver shifts from P to R/N/D/S with the parking brake applied. The EPB is automatically released when the accelerator pedal is depressed in D/R/S mode and the following conditions are met.
    1. The driver's door must be closed and the seat belt must be fastened.
    2. The hood must be closed in D.
    3. The trunk must be closed in R.
  4. Bedding-in mode: You must perform the "Bedding-in process" to optimize initial EPB performance after replacing the parking brake pads and the rear brake disc. Bedding-in process
    1. Turn the ignition on and start the engine.
    2. Depress the brake pedal twice within 10 seconds and keep it depressed after the last depression.
    3. Press the EPB switch 4 times, then release it 3 times within 10 seconds.
    4. The pads must be bedded in by six dynamic braking cycles from 30 ~ 35 km/h to a complete stop of the vehicle. (If the vehicle speed exceeds 50 km/h in sleeper mode, it turns off automatically.)
    5. After each braking cycle, a cooling period for the pads is required to prevent damage to them.
      A. Cooling can be achieved by driving a distance of 500 m after each braking cycle without applying the EPB, or by keeping the vehicle stationary for 1 minute after each braking.
  5. Auto Hold: Auto Hold helps keep the vehicle stationary by applying the hydraulic brakes when the vehicle stops.
    1. Operating Conditions
      A. Engine running
      B. The Auto Hold switch is ON.
      C. The driver's door, hood and trunk lid must be closed.
      D. Driver seat belt fastened
      E. The shift lever is not in the P range.
      F. Vehicle stopped condition is maintained when the brake pedal is depressed.
    2. The Auto Hold function maintains the vehicle stopped for no more than 10 minutes. The ESP valve maintains the stopped state by blocking the oil passage with pressure from the brake pedal.
    3. Total Auto Hold operating time: 30 minutes maximum
    4. Auto release function: Auto Hold mode is released when the driver starts to accelerate the vehicle by depressing the pedal in the D/S/R range.
    5. Automatic Conversion from Auto Hold to EPB: Auto Hold automatically converts to EPB operation if any of the conditions below are met. [Normal conversion cases]
      A. When the driver's door is opened and the driver's seat belt is unfastened at the same time.
      B. When the hood is opened while the shift lever is in the D or S position.
      C. When the trunk is opened with the shift lever in the R position.
      D. When Auto Hold operating time exceeds 10 minutes.
      E. Stopped on a 25-degree slope
      [Abnormal conversion cases]
      A. When detailed vehicle movement is detected.
      B. When a malfunction of the ESP hydraulic system is detected.
  6. EPB warning lamp
    1. The EPB warning lamp illuminates for 3 seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON. If the EPB system operates normally, the EPB warning lamp goes off. OFF
    2. If the EPB system does not operate properly, the EPB warning lamp illuminates.
    3. The EPB warning lamp illuminates in diagnostic mode.
  7. AUTO HOLD lamp / AUTO HOLD function lamp
    1. AUTO HOLD ON
      A. The brake system operates automatically when vehicle speed is 0, when parked or waiting at a red light, or during braking. (AUTO HOLD function indicator: green)
      B. The brake system is released automatically when the accelerator pedal is depressed. (AUTO HOLD indicator: white)
    2. AUTO HOLD switch OFF: The AUTO HOLD function does not operate.
