Cruise Control Operation

~1min read

ESC On Condition

When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the ESC and ESC OFF indicators illuminate for approximately three seconds and then turn off, after which ESC is on.

During Operation

When ESC is operating, the ESC indicator flashes:

  • When you apply the brake under conditions that may lock the wheels, you may hear brake noise or feel a pulsation in the brake pedal. This is normal and means that your ESC is active.
  • When ESC is operating, the engine may not respond to the accelerator pedal. This is normal under these conditions.
  • If cruise control was in use when ESC was activated, cruise control will automatically cancel. Cruise control can be turned on again when road conditions allow. See "Cruise Control System" later in this chapter. (if equipped)
  • When driving out of mud or on a slippery road, engine speed (RPM) may not increase even when the accelerator pedal is pressed deeply. This is necessary to maintain vehicle stability and traction and does not indicate a problem.

ESC OFF Condition

To cancel ESC operation:

• Condition 1

Briefly press the ESC OFF button (the ESC OFF indicator light and message will illuminate). In this condition, the engine control function does not operate. In other words, the traction control function does not operate; only the brake control function operates.

• Condition 2

Press and hold the ESC OFF button for more than 3 seconds. The ESC OFF indicator light and message will illuminate and a chime will sound. In this state, the engine control function and brake control function do not operate. In other words, the vehicle stability control function no longer operates.

If the ignition switch is in the LOCK/OFF position while the ESC system is turned off, the ESC system will remain off. After restarting the engine, the ESC system will automatically turn back on.
