WARNING When the engine is running, keep hands, hair, clothing, tools, etc. away from the fan and the water pump drive belt. Even if the fan is not running, it may start automatically without warning.

Make sure the drive belt tension is correct. If the belt is too loose, the battery may not charge properly, the engine may overheat, or the belt may wear excessively. When pressed with the thumb midway between the pulleys, the belt deflection should be within the following values:

6-8 mm

The belt should also be checked for damage. If the belt needs to be replaced or adjusted, proceed as follows:

  1. Loosen the three alternator mounting bolts.
  2. If the belt needs to be replaced, move the alternator toward the engine block.

    Replace the belt with a new one.

  3. To adjust the tension, move the alternator to a position where the belt deflection is within the limits above, then tighten the three mounting bolts.
