Precautions regarding exhaust gas

~2min read

If inhaled, exhaust gas can be harmful to the human body, as it contains toxic substances.

WARNING Exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide (CO), which is colorless and odorless. Observe the following precautions.

Failure to observe these precautions may allow exhaust gas to enter the passenger compartment, resulting in an accident due to the driver losing consciousness, or may cause death or serious health risks.

■ Important points when driving

  • Keep the back door closed.
  • If you smell exhaust gas inside the vehicle even when the back door is closed, open the windows and have the vehicle checked as soon as possible at an authorized Toyota dealer or repair shop, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional.

■ When parking the vehicle

  • If the vehicle is in a poorly ventilated area or a completely enclosed space, such as a garage, turn off the engine.
  • Do not leave the vehicle with the engine running for an extended period.
If this situation cannot be avoided, park the vehicle in an open area and make sure exhaust gas does not enter the passenger compartment.
  • Do not leave the engine running in an area where snow may accumulate, or during snowfall. If snow builds up around the vehicle while the engine is running, exhaust gas may concentrate and enter the passenger compartment.
  • ■ Exhaust pipe The exhaust system must be inspected periodically. If holes or cracks caused by corrosion, damage to a joint or abnormal exhaust noise are found, have the vehicle inspected and repaired at any authorized Toyota dealer or repair shop, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional.
