Before driving, make sure all occupants are wearing their seat belts.

Correct use of seat belts

Corretto uso delle cinture di sicurezza
  • Pull the shoulder belt out so that it lies fully across the shoulder, without touching the neck or slipping off the shoulder.
  • Position the lap belt as low as possible across the hips.
  • Adjust the seatback position. Sit upright and well back in the seat.
  • Do not twist the seat belt.

Fastening and unfastening the seat belt

Allacciare e slacciare la cintura di sicurezza
  1. To fasten the seat belt correctly, push the tongue into the buckle until you hear a click.
  2. To unfasten the seat belt, press the release button.

Seat belt pretensioners (front seats)

Pretensionatori delle cinture di sicurezza (sedili anteriori)

Pretensioners cause the seat belts to quickly restrain the occupants by retracting the belts when the vehicle is subjected to certain types of severe frontal or side collisions.

The pretensioners do not activate in a minor side collision, rear collision, frontal impact, or vehicle rollover.

■ Emergency locking retractor (ELR)

The retractor locks the belt in the event of sudden braking or a collision. It may also lock if the occupant leans forward too quickly.

Slow, smooth movements allow the belt to extend and the occupant to move comfortably.

■ Using the seat belt with a child seat

The vehicle's seat belts are basically designed for adult occupants.

  • Use an appropriate child restraint system until the child is tall enough to wear the vehicle's seat belts correctly.
  • When the child is tall enough to wear the vehicle's seat belts correctly, follow the instructions for using seat belts.

■ Replacing the belt after pretensioner activation If the vehicle is involved in a multiple collision, the pretensioner activates only at the first impact and will not activate in the second or subsequent impacts.

■ Seat belt regulations If there are regulations regarding seat belts in your country, contact an authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional, for seat belt replacement or installation.

WARNING Observe the following precautions to reduce the risk of injury in the event of sudden braking, sharp steering, or an accident.

Failure to observe this may result in serious or fatal injury.

■ Wearing a seat belt

  • Make sure all passengers wear a seat belt.
  • Always wear the seat belt correctly.
  • Each seat belt must be worn by only one person. Do not use a seat belt for more than one person at a time, including children.
  • Toyota recommends that children be seated in the rear seat and always wear a seat belt and/or use an appropriate child restraint system.
  • Do not recline the seat more than necessary to achieve a correct seating position. The seat belt is most effective when occupants sit upright and firmly against the seatback.
  • Do not wear the shoulder belt under your arm.
  • Always wear the seat belt low and snug across the hips.

■ Pregnant women

 Donne in gravidanza

Consult your doctor and wear the seat belt correctly. Pregnant women should position the lap portion of the belt as low as possible across the hips, as for other passengers, fully extend the shoulder belt over the shoulder, and avoid contact of the belt with the abdomen.

If the seat belt is not worn correctly, in the event of sudden braking or a collision, serious or fatal injury may occur not only to the mother but also to the fetus.

■ Persons with disabilities

Consult your doctor and wear the seat belt correctly.

■ When children are in the vehicle

Do not allow children to play with the seat belt. If the belt wraps around a child's neck, the child could suffocate or suffer other serious injuries resulting in death.

If this happens and the buckle cannot be released, cut the belt with scissors.

■ Seat belt pretensioners

If the pretensioner has activated, the SRS airbag warning light will come on.

In that case, the seat belt can no longer be used and must be replaced at any authorized Toyota dealer or repair shop, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional.

■ Seat belt damage and wear

  • To avoid damaging the seat belts, prevent the belt, tongue or buckle from becoming caught in the door.
  • Inspect the seat belt system periodically. Check for cuts, fraying and loose parts. Do not use damaged seat belts until they have been replaced. Damaged seat belts cannot protect occupants from serious or fatal injury.
  • Make sure the belt and tongue are locked and that the belt is not twisted.

If the seat belt does not function properly, contact an authorized Toyota dealer or repair shop, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional, immediately.

  • Replace the seat assembly, including the belts, if the vehicle has been involved in a serious collision, even if no damage is visible.
  • Do not attempt to install, remove, modify, disassemble or dispose of the seat belts. Have any necessary repairs carried out by an authorized Toyota dealer or repair shop, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional. Improper use of the pretensioners may prevent them from functioning correctly, resulting in serious or fatal injury.
