Starter Interlock Switch
Adjustment
PROCEDURE
1. If the engine starts when the shift lever is in any position other than Park or Neutral, the starter interlock switch must be adjusted.
2. Apply the parking brake and chock the rear wheels. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on stands. Shift into Neutral.
3. Disconnect the switch connector and remove the switch mounting bolts.

4. Connect the ohmmeter probes to the terminals of the switch connector, and rotate the switch until the ohmmeter shows continuity, indicating that it is in the Neutral position. Then tighten the mounting bolts.
Replacement
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
* If your vehicle's stereo has an anti-theft code system, make sure you know the radio activation code before disconnecting the battery.
2. Shift the transmission into Neutral.
3. Remove the nut and disconnect the shift lever.
4. Disconnect the connector.
5. Using a screwdriver, bend back the tab of the lock washer under the nut that secures the switch to the shaft.
6. Remove the lock nut, lock washer and flat washers.
7. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the switch from the shaft.
8. To install the switch, align the edges of the shaft with the edges of the cutout in the switch and slide it onto the shaft. Install the flat washers, lock washer and mounting nut. Tighten the mounting nut and bend the tab of the lock washer.

9. Turn the switch so that the Neutral position line (1) is aligned with the groove (2). Then tighten the bolts and connect the connector.
10. Install the shift lever, connect the negative battery cable and check that the engine does not start when any gear other than Neutral or Park is selected. If necessary, adjust the switch as described above.
