Battery Removal and Installation

~2min read

The battery is located in the luggage compartment behind the right side trim panel. The battery supplies current for starting the vehicle, for ignition and lighting, and for other electrical consumers.

* Disconnecting the battery may erase information stored in the vehicle's electronic memory modules:

a) Information may be erased from some electronic control modules.
b) On a coded radio, the code is erased. Such a radio can be identified by the message "CODE" that appears on the display for a few seconds after power-up. If the code is unknown, the radio cannot be used. The code is listed on the special card supplied with the radio or can be obtained from the manufacturer.
c) Radio stations stored in the radio memory are also erased. The clock settings and onboard computer data are erased.
d) After battery installation, the sliding sunroof panel must be reinitialized.
e) Fault memory data in the engine control module is erased.

REMOVAL

1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Open the luggage compartment and pull back the right side trim panel at the handle.
3. Remove the plastic cover from the cap.
4. Disconnect the battery cables. First disconnect the ground cable (-) (1), then the positive cable (+) (2). The positive cable connection is covered by a bracket; remove it. Refer to the accompanying illustration.

5. Отверните болт (3) и гайку (4).

5. Remove the bolt (3) and nut (4).

6. Remove the bracket (5) and the black battery cover (6).

Remove the plastic spacer retainer (arrow).

Slide the battery slightly rearward in the direction of travel and lift it out of the holder.

Disconnect the vent hose at the front edge of the battery.

Fold back the handles and remove the battery.

* The battery contains poisonous substances. Do not dispose of it with household waste. When buying a new battery, return the old one or dispose of it through a specialized recycling service. Information on battery collection points can be obtained from local authorities.

INSTALLATION

1. Before installing the battery, clean its terminals, for example with a brass brush. To protect against corrosion, coat the terminals with acid-resistant terminal grease, such as BOSCH terminal grease.
2. Install the battery so that the terminals face the fender.
3. Connect the vent hose at the front upper edge.
4. Slide the battery forward until it stops. The battery base must sit in the holder.
5. Insert the plastic spacer retainer.
6. Install the cover and the hold-down clamp.
7. Tighten the clamp.
8. Connect the positive cable (+), then the negative cable (-). Install the positive terminal cover.

* Make sure the ground connection is secure and the contacts are clean. High transition resistance can overload electronic components, especially when starting the engine. In extreme cases this may damage components.

9. Insert the plastic cover into the cap and reinstall the side trim panel.
10. Set the clock. Store radio stations in the radio memory.
11. Reinitialize the sliding sunroof panel. Refer to the section Sliding Sunroof Motor Removal and Installation.
12. If necessary, enter the radio code.
