Starter Solenoid Relay Removal, Inspection and Installation

If the starter solenoid relay is faulty, the starter pinion does not engage with the flywheel ring gear, and the engine cannot be started.

INSPECTION WITHOUT REMOVAL

1. Place the gear selector lever in the neutral position.
2. Using a jumper cable, connect terminal 30 (thick positive cable) and terminal 50 (thin cable from the ignition switch) on the starter. The pinion should extend forward without the starter rotating.

3. If this does not occur, remove the starter and replace the solenoid relay.

REMOVAL

1. Remove the starter and repeat the inspection described above using the vehicle battery. A starter cable may be used as the wire to starter terminal 50. If the solenoid relay operates without the starter cranking, the starter must be sent for repair.
2. If the solenoid relay does not operate, remove it and replace it.

INSTALLATION

1. Apply sealant to the joint surface (F). Refer to the accompanying illustration.

2. Connect the solenoid relay to the fork in the starter and secure it with the bolts.
3. Secure the solenoid relay wire.
4. Recheck the starter as described above.
5. Install the starter.
