Vehicle equipment. Integrated universal remote control. Sun visor
This chapter describes the integrated universal remote control in the interior mirror of the BMW 5 Series G30, which can operate up to three external devices such as garage door openers or lighting systems. Programming is simple using the respective hand-held transmitter and is supported visually by LED indicators. The chapter also contains information on compatibility, safety warnings, and synchronization for rolling code systems. The sun visor is also covered: in addition to glare protection, it offers an illuminated vanity mirror. These small details complete the driving experience.
Vehicle equipment
This chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional equipment offered in the model series. It therefore also describes equipment that is not available in a given vehicle, for example due to the selected optional equipment or country variant. This also applies to safety-related functions and systems. When using the corresponding functions and systems, observe the applicable laws and regulations.
Integrated universal remote control
Principle
The integrated universal remote control in the interior mirror can operate up to 3 functions of radio-controlled systems, e.g. garage door openers or lighting systems.
General
The integrated universal remote control replaces up to 3 different hand-held transmitters.
To operate it, the buttons on the interior mirror must be programmed with the desired functions. The hand-held transmitter of the respective system is required for programming.
Before selling the vehicle, delete the stored functions for safety.
Safety information
WARNING When operating radio-controlled systems with the integrated universal remote control, e.g. a garage door, body parts can be trapped. There is a risk of injury or damage to property.
When programming and operating, make sure the movement range of the respective system is clear. Also observe the safety information for the hand-held transmitter.
Compatibility
If the symbol is shown on the packaging or in the operating instructions of the system to be operated, the system is generally compatible with the integrated universal remote control.
A list of compatible hand-held transmitters is available on the internet: www.homelink.com HomeLink is a registered trademark of Gentex Corporation.

Programming
General
- Switch on standby mode.
- Initial setup: Press and hold the two outer buttons on the rearview mirror at the same time for approx. 10 seconds, until the LED on the rearview mirror flashes green quickly. All programming of the buttons on the rearview mirror will be deleted.
- Press the button on the rearview mirror to be programmed. The LED flashes orange.
- Hold the hand-held transmitter of the system to be operated approx. 2 to 8 cm from the buttons on the rearview mirror. The required distance depends on the hand-held transmitter.
- Press and hold the button for the desired function on the hand-held transmitter. The LED on the rearview mirror initially flashes slowly orange.
- As soon as the LED flashes faster green or lights up, release the button. Steady green light indicates that the button on the rearview mirror has been programmed. Faster green flashing indicates a rolling code radio system.
The systems can be operated with the buttons on the rearview mirror.
Special feature for rolling code radio systems
If the system cannot be operated after repeated programming, check whether the system to be operated is equipped with a rolling code radio system.
To do so, refer to the operating instructions of the system or press and hold the programmed button on the rearview mirror longer. If the LED on the rearview mirror first flashes quickly and then lights up steadily for 2 seconds, the system is equipped with a rolling code radio system.
The flashing and lighting of the LED repeats for approx. 20 seconds.
For systems with a rolling code radio system, the integrated universal remote control and the system must also be synchronized.
Also refer to the operating instructions of the system to be set for information on synchronization.
A second person makes synchronization easier.
Synchronize the integrated universal remote control with the system:
- Park the vehicle within range of the radio-controlled system.
- Program the corresponding button on the rearview mirror as described.
- Locate and press the synchronization button on the system to be set.
Reprogramming individual buttons
- Switch on standby mode.
- Press and hold the button on the rearview mirror to be programmed.
- As soon as the LED on the rearview mirror flashes slowly orange, hold the hand-held transmitter of the system to be operated approx. 2 to 8 cm from the buttons on the rearview mirror. The required distance depends on the hand-held transmitter.
- Press and also hold the button for the desired function on the hand-held transmitter.
- As soon as the LED on the rearview mirror flashes faster or lights up, release both buttons.
The faster flashing or lighting indicates that the button on the rearview mirror has been programmed. The system can then be operated with the button on the rearview mirror.
If the LED does not flash faster within 60 seconds at most, change the distance and repeat the programming from step 4. Several attempts with different distances may be necessary.
Wait at least 15 seconds between attempts.Operation
WARNING When operating radio-controlled systems with the integrated universal remote control, e.g. garage door, body parts can become trapped. There is a risk of injury or damage to property.
When programming and operating, make sure the movement range of the respective system is clear. Also observe the safety information for the hand-held transmitter.
The system, e.g. the garage door, can be operated with the button on the rearview mirror when the vehicle is in ready mode.
To do so, within the reception range of the system, press and hold the button until the function is triggered. The LED on the rearview mirror lights up steadily while the radio signal is being transmitted.
Deleting stored functions
Press and hold the two outer buttons on the rearview mirror at the same time for approx. 10 seconds, until the LED flashes green quickly. All stored functions will be deleted. Individual functions cannot be deleted.

Vanity mirror
A vanity mirror is located in the sun visor behind a cover. When the cover is opened, the mirror lighting switches on.
The integrated universal remote control of the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 is a real convenience feature that often shows its full benefit in everyday use. It replaces up to three different hand-held transmitters and allows you to safely operate garage doors, driveways or lighting systems directly from the vehicle, without the hassle of handling individual remote controls.
The option to program the buttons individually and even synchronize complex rolling codes is particularly helpful. This ensures that modern radio-controlled systems can also be operated without problems. The system is designed to be easy to use while meeting the highest safety requirements.
FAQQuestion 1: Does the universal remote control need to be reprogrammed after a battery change?
Answer: No, the programming is retained, because it is stored independently of the vehicle battery.
Question 2: Can the system also be operated while driving?
Answer: Operation is only possible when the vehicle is in ready mode, and should only be used when the vehicle is stationary.
