High Beam Assistant

~3min read

The High Beam Assistant in the BMW 5 Series G30 independently detects traffic situations and controls the high beams accordingly. Sensors detect oncoming or preceding vehicles in good time, so that the system switches automatically between low beam and high beam. This provides optimal visibility without dazzling other road users. In combination with Glare-free High Beam, the high beam remains active while individual light segments are switched off in a targeted way. The system also adapts when driving in countries with left-hand traffic, although with limitations. Activation is conveniently performed by pressing the button on the turn signal lever, with indicator lamps showing the status. The assistant is a real comfort benefit in dark surroundings and actively contributes to safety. Nevertheless, it does not replace the driver's responsibility – in special situations such as fog, animals crossing the road or tight bends, manual dimming is required.

Principle

The High Beam Assistant detects other road users early and automatically switches the high beams on or off depending on the traffic situation.

General

The High Beam Assistant switches the high beams on when traffic conditions allow. At low speeds, the system does not switch on the high beams.

The system responds to the light of oncoming and preceding traffic, as well as to sufficient ambient lighting, e.g. in built-up areas.

The high beams can be switched on and off at any time as usual.

On vehicles equipped with the glare-free High Beam Assistant, the high beams are not switched off when oncoming vehicles are detected. Instead, only the areas that would dazzle oncoming traffic are masked out. In this case, the blue indicator light remains on.

When crossing a border into a country where traffic drives on the opposite side of the road from the country of registration, and the headlights are adjusted accordingly, the High Beam Assistant may be only partially available.

Activate/deactivate

Switch position:Press the button on the turn signal lever.

When the low beams are switched on, the indicator light in the instrument cluster lights up.

Switching between low beam and high beam is performed automatically.

The blue indicator light in the instrument cluster lights up when the high beams are switched on by the system.

When switching the high beams on or off manually, the High Beam Assistant is deactivated.

To reactivate the High Beam Assistant, press the button on the turn signal lever.

System limitations

The High Beam Assistant cannot replace your personal judgment on using the high beams. In situations that require it, switch to low beam manually.

In the following situations, the system does not work or works only to a limited extent, and a personal response may be required:

  • In extremely adverse weather conditions such as fog or heavy precipitation.
  • When detecting road users with poor self-illumination, such as pedestrians, cyclists, riders, horse-drawn carriages, trains or ships near the road, or animals crossing the road.
  • On sharp bends, on steep crests or dips, at crossing traffic, or with partially obscured oncoming traffic on the motorway.
  • In poorly lit built-up areas or in the presence of highly reflective signs.
  • If the windshield in the area in front of the interior rearview mirror is fogged, dirty, or obscured by stickers, toll vignettes, etc.

The High Beam Assistant of the BMW 5 G30/G31 offers a maximum of comfort and safety when driving at night. It reliably detects other road users and automatically switches the high beams on or off, so that the driver can concentrate fully on the road. The best possible illumination of the roadway is ensured even in difficult lighting conditions.

The glare-free High Beam Assistant is particularly innovative. It protects oncoming vehicles through targeted light shading while still providing optimal illumination. This makes driving in the dark less tiring and more relaxed. The system can be overridden manually at any time if required.

This shows how the BMW 5 G30/G31 uses state-of-the-art lighting technology to contribute to active safety and driving comfort, a real advantage on night journeys.
