Automatic headlight control. Daytime running lights. Dynamic ECO light function. Adaptive cornering light
The lighting systems in the BMW 5 Series G30 excel with Automatic Headlight Control, Daytime Running Lights and Adaptive Cornering Light. The low beams switch on automatically depending on the brightness, which provides added safety especially in tunnels or in rain. The daytime running lights remain active during the day and make the vehicle more visible in traffic. In addition, the dynamic ECO light function provides energy-optimized illumination depending on driving behavior. The centerpiece is the Adaptive Cornering Light: it follows the course of the road and adapts to speed, steering angle and navigation data. Special functions such as City light, Highway light, Cornering light and Roundabout light ensure optimal visibility in all situations. This chapter shows how state-of-the-art lighting technology makes driving safer and more comfortable.
Automatic Headlight Control
Principle
The low beams are switched on or off automatically depending on the ambient brightness, e.g. in a tunnel, at dusk or during precipitation.
General
A blue sky with a low sun can cause the lights to switch on.
Activate
Switch position:
The indicator lamp in the instrument cluster illuminates when the low beams are switched on.
System limitations
Automatic Headlight Control cannot replace your own assessment of the lighting conditions.
The sensors cannot detect fog or hazy weather, for example. In such situations, switch on the lights manually, otherwise a safety risk arises.
Daytime Running Lights
General
In some countries daytime running lights are mandatory, so they may not be switchable
off.
Switching on/off
Switch position:
The daytime running lights illuminate when the vehicle is in Ready mode.
Via iDrive:
- "My Vehicle"
- "Vehicle settings"
- "Lights"
- "Exterior lighting"
- Select the desired setting.
The setting is saved for the driver profile currently in use.
Dynamic ECO Light Function
General
The brightness of the low beams is reduced depending on speed and distance to the vehicle ahead.
Activate
Switch position:
Activate driving mode ECO PRO.
Adaptive Cornering Light
Principle
Adaptive Cornering Light is a variable headlight control that allows dynamic illumination of the road.
General
Depending on the steering angle and other parameters, the headlight beam follows the course of the road.
To avoid dazzling oncoming traffic, the Adaptive Cornering Light does not swivel toward the driver's side when the vehicle is stationary.
If the headlights are switched over when crossing a border into countries where traffic drives on the opposite side to the country of registration, see page 146, Adaptive Cornering Light may only be available to a limited extent.
Depending on equipment, Adaptive Cornering Light consists of one or more systems:
- Variable light distribution.
- Cornering light.
- Roundabout light.
Activate
Switch position:
Adaptive Cornering Light is active when the vehicle is in Ready mode.
Variable Light Distribution
Principle
Variable light distribution allows even better illumination of the road.
General
The light distribution is adjusted automatically to the speed.
On vehicles with navigation system, the light distribution is adjusted automatically depending on navigation data and speed.
City light
The illuminated area of the low beams is widened at the sides.
Highway light
The light range of the low beams is increased.
Cornering Light
On tight bends, e.g. hairpin bends, or when turning, a cornering light is activated up to a certain speed, illuminating the area on the inside of the bend.
The cornering light is activated automatically depending on the steering angle or the turn signal.
When reversing, the cornering light may be activated automatically regardless of the steering angle.
Roundabout Light
Shortly before entering a roundabout, the cornering lights are switched on on both sides.
The edge of the road is illuminated better.
Shortly after leaving a roundabout, the cornering lights are switched off on both sides again.
Adaptive Headlight Range Control
Adaptive Headlight Range Control compensates for acceleration and braking to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic and to achieve optimal illumination of the road.
The lighting systems of the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 offer state-of-the-art technologies such as Automatic Headlight Control, Daytime Running Lights and Adaptive Cornering Light. These functions adjust the lighting dynamically to the surroundings and thus ensure optimal visibility in all weather conditions and at any time of day.
Adaptive Cornering Light deserves special mention: it illuminates the road according to the steering angle and thus significantly increases safety in darkness. City light and Highway light also contribute to greater driving comfort through their variable light distribution. The dynamic ECO light function additionally saves energy.
In this way, the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 combines state-of-the-art lighting technology with a high level of safety and efficiency – a model example of intelligent vehicle design.
