Cooling System

Draining and Filling the Cooling System

~1min read

PROCEDURE.

1. Place a drain pan under the vehicle to collect the coolant.

2. Remove the expansion tank cap.

3. Loosen the clamp on the lower radiator hose and disconnect the hose from the radiator fitting, or open the drain cock.

4. Collect the coolant in the drain pan.

5. Remove, flush and reinstall the expansion tank.

6. After the coolant has fully drained, connect the hose to the radiator and tighten the clamp, close the drain cock if it was opened.

7. Pour clean water through the expansion tank filler neck. Fill the tank slowly so that the upper hose remains above the water level at all times. This is

necessary to allow air to escape from the cooling system.

8. Start the engine and warm it up to the temperature at which the thermostat valve opens. Water will circulate through the radiator and the radiator hoses will heat up.

9. Switch off the engine. Repeat steps 1 through 8 several times until the drained water is clean and free of rust color.

10. Fill the system with fresh coolant through the expansion tank filler neck. The coolant

must contain at least 50% ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol concentration above 70% is not permitted. Fill the expansion tank to the MAX mark.
