~32min read

Symptom Chart: Automatic Transmission

The diagnosis in this manual assumes a certain level of skill and knowledge of Ford-approved diagnostic procedures.
REFER TO: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).

In most cases, the PCM/TCM sets a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) to help with diagnosis. Refer to the DTC before using the Symptom Chart. The Condition column lists the vehicle conditions. The Action column refers to a pinpoint test. Each pinpoint test lists the possible symptoms and the components that may cause each symptom. The components are listed in the order of disassembly.

PINPOINT TEST K: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH OPERATION

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

  • Torque converter clutch (TCC) does not apply
    • Access the PCM/TCM and monitor the TCC, TC_SLIPSDD and TC_SLIPACT Parameter Identifications (PIDs). Road test the vehicle, making sure a TCC apply is attempted. If the PIDs indicate TCC slip during the apply command, check the TCC for a non-apply condition. Refer to: Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 10-Speed Automatic Transmission - 10R60, Diagnosis and Testing).
  • Torque converter clutch (TCC) is always applied
    • Access the PCM/TCM and monitor the TCC, TC_SLIPSDD and TC_SLIPACT Parameter Identifications (PIDs). Start the engine and select Drive. If the PIDs indicate that the TCC is not slipping, and the engine surges or stalls when Drive is selected, check the TCC for an always applied condition. Refer to: Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 10-Speed Automatic Transmission - 10R60, Diagnosis and Testing).
  • Torque converter clutch (TCC) cycles on and off, shudders
    • Check the transmission fluid level. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Level Check (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 10-Speed Automatic Transmission - 10R60, General Procedures).
    • Access the PCM/TCM and monitor the TCC, TC_SLIPSDD and TC_SLIPACT Parameter Identifications (PIDs). Road test the vehicle, making sure a TCC apply is attempted. If the PIDs indicate TCC shudder, check the TCC for a shudder condition. Refer to: Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 10-Speed Automatic Transmission - 10R60, Diagnosis and Testing).

PINPOINT TEST M: NOISE, VIBRATION, HARSHNESS

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

  • Whine noise
    • Some vehicles with the 10R60 transmission may exhibit a whine noise. It may occur at idle and during driving, originating from the bell housing and front pan area of the transmission. The whine noise may become louder with temperature and increases with engine speed in Park. A small amount of whine noise is considered characteristic of the 10R60 transmission due to the gear set front support offset and does not affect durability.
  • 2WD - clunk when shifting from Reverse to Drive or from Drive to Reverse
    • All-wheel drive vehicles are equipped with an anti-rattle washer between the transmission output shaft and the transfer case secondary shaft flange. When the driveline load changes, such as when shifting from Reverse to Drive, the anti-rattle washer absorbs the normal movement between the two components. If the component interface is dry, rusty or otherwise sticky, a slip/stick condition may result. The slip/stick condition produces more than normal force on the anti-rattle washer, which may cause an objectionable clunk noise. Applying a light coating of high-temperature grease to both sides of the anti-rattle washer and the entire transmission output shaft spline area will reduce the clunk noise to a normal, acceptable level.
    • To remove the transmission output shaft flange and lubricate the output shaft and anti-rattle washer, refer to: Secondary Shaft Seal (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 10-Speed Automatic Transmission - 10R60, Removal and Installation).
  • Noise
    • Check the engine drive accessories, suspension, CV joints, driveline and transmission cooler lines. Refer to: Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) (100-04 Noise, Vibration and Harshness, Diagnosis and Testing).

PINPOINT TEST N: OTHER CONCERNS

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

  • Positive resistance or rocking sensation when starting in Park
    • The 10R60 applies three clutches in anticipation of Reverse or Drive engagement. Each clutch application creates a slight positive resistance from the transmission and may cause a slight rocking sensation of the vehicle at or immediately after engine start in Park. This is normal and desirable 10R60 transmission behavior.
  • Assembly gel is present in the transmission cooler housing ports and/or the main control module on new or low-mileage transmissions.
    • A clear gel-like lubricant is injected into the transmission oil cooler ports before the transmission is shipped from the assembly plant. If sufficient lubricant has been injected, it may be pushed back out into the main control. The lubricant acts as a plug to prevent leaks when the transmission is installed in the vehicle. The lubricant found in the cooler ports and/or the main control of new transmission assemblies is normal and does not affect performance. When the transmission reaches operating temperature, the lubricant will melt and dissolve into the transmission fluid.
  • Shift Lever Hard to Move
    • Refer to Shift Lever Sticking or Hard to Move - Excessive Effort condition. Refer to: External Controls (307-05A External Controls Automatic Transmission - 10-Speed Automatic Transmission - 10R60, Diagnosis and Testing).
