12V Battery Replacement
WARNING: Keep batteries out of the reach of children. Batteries contain sulfuric acid. Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Shield your eyes when working near the battery to protect against possible splashing of acid solution. If acid contacts skin or eyes, flush immediately with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention. If acid is swallowed, call a physician immediately.
Your vehicle is equipped with a Motorcraft® maintenance-free battery, which normally does not require addition of water during its service life.
When replacing the low-voltage battery, have an authorized dealer replace it with a Ford-recommended low-voltage battery that meets the vehicle's electrical requirements.
To ensure correct operation of the Battery Management System (BMS), do not allow technicians to connect any electrical ground devices directly to the negative terminal of the low-voltage battery. Connecting to the low-voltage battery negative post may cause inaccurate battery state measurements and potential system malfunction.
For longer trouble-free service, keep the top of the battery clean and dry. Also, make sure the battery cables are always firmly attached to the battery terminals.
If you notice corrosion on the battery or terminals, disconnect the cables from the terminal and clean with a wire brush. You can neutralize acid with a solution of baking soda and water.
When battery replacement is required, the battery should be replaced only with a Ford-recommended replacement battery that meets the vehicle's electrical safety requirements.
Because your vehicle's engine is electronically controlled by a computer, some engine control settings are maintained by low-voltage battery power. Some engine computer settings, such as idle speed strategy and fuel trim adjustments, optimize drivability and engine performance. Other computer settings, such as clock and radio presets, are also stored in memory powered by the low-voltage battery. When the low-voltage battery is disconnected and reconnected, these settings are erased. Perform the following procedure to restore the settings:
- When the vehicle is stopped completely, set the parking brake.
- Shift the transmission into Park (P).
- Turn off all accessories.
- Fully depress the brake pedal and start the vehicle.
- Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. While the engine warms up, complete the following: Reset the clock. Reset the power window anti-pinch function.
- Allow the engine to idle for at least one minute. If the engine stalls, depress the accelerator pedal to restart the engine.
- With the engine running, depress the brake pedal and shift into Neutral (N).
- Allow the engine to run for at least one minute while depressing the accelerator pedal.
- Drive the vehicle at least 12 miles (20 km) to fully relearn the idle and fuel trim strategy.
Make sure you dispose of old batteries in an environmentally friendly manner. Refer to local authority recommendations for disposal of old batteries.
