Drive Shaft Seal Replacement
PROCEDURE
1. Transmission fluid leaks are most often caused by wear or mechanical damage to the drive shaft seals. Replacing the seals is fairly simple and does not require removing the transmission from the vehicle.
2. The seals are located on both sides of the transmission case where the drive shafts enter. Raise the vehicle and support it on safety stands. A sign of seal leakage is fluid traces on the transmission case walls directly below the drive shafts.
3. Remove the drive shaft(s) (see Clutch and Drive Shafts section).

4. Using a pry bar or a large flat-tip screwdriver, remove the old seal from its bore in the transmission case.
5. If the seal cannot be removed with a pry bar or screwdriver, use a special seal puller (available at auto parts stores).

6. Using a socket of suitable size or a length of pipe of suitable diameter as a driver, install the new seal in its original position. Make sure the seal is seated squarely and fully into the bore. Lubricate the seal lips with transmission fluid.
The driver must bear only on the hard outer edge of the seal end face.
7. Install the drive shaft(s), taking care not to damage the lip(s) of the new seal(s).
