Drive Shaft and Shift Lever Removal and Installation
The vehicles covered in this Manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Before performing any work near the airbag module, steering column or instrument panel, disconnect the SRS to avoid injury from accidental deployment (refer to the Body Electrical Section). SRS wiring can be easily identified by its yellow insulation.
Shift Cables
PROCEDURE
Even if only one of the shift cables is damaged, replace both cables as a set (shift and select cables are not available separately).
1. Unscrew the plastic shift knob and remove it from the shift lever.
2. Remove the console assembly (refer to the Body Section).

3. Remove the cotter pin, remove the washer and disconnect the shift cable from the shift rod, then remove the self-locking nut and disconnect the second cable from the base of the shift lever.

4. Remove the retaining washers and release the cables from the shift lever mounting bracket.

5. Open the hood and locate the front ends of the shift cables. Disconnect the cables from the select and shift levers on the transmission (the select lever is on top of the shift mechanism cover, the shift lever is on the assembly). Remove the retaining washers and release the cables from the support brackets.
6. Follow the cables back to the engine compartment bulkhead and release them from the grommets.
7. Pull the cables out into the passenger compartment.
8. Installation is the reverse of removal. When connecting the front ends of the cables, make sure the plastic washer is installed between the cable end and the steel washer (select cable) and between the steel washer and the cotter pin (shift cable).
