Check Tire Pressure

~1min read

Check the tires, including the spare, once a month or more often.

How to Check

Use a quality tire pressure gauge to check tire pressure. You cannot tell whether your tires are properly inflated just by looking at them. Radial tires may look properly inflated even when they are underinflated.

Remove the valve cap from the tire valve stem. Press the tire pressure gauge firmly onto the valve to measure the pressure. If the cold tire pressure matches the recommended pressure shown on the tire label on the driver's side center pillar or in this manual, no further adjustment is required. If the pressure is low, add air until the recommended pressure is reached. Be sure to reinstall the valve caps on the valve stems. Without a valve cap, dirt or moisture may enter the valve core and cause air leakage. If a valve cap is missing, install a new one as soon as possible.

If the tire is overinflated, release air by pressing the metal pin in the center of the tire valve. Recheck the tire pressure with a tire pressure gauge. Be sure to reinstall the valve caps on the valve stems. Without the valve cap, dirt or moisture may enter the valve core and cause air leakage. If a valve cap is missing, install a new one as soon as possible.

Cold tires means the vehicle has been parked for 3 hours and has been driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) during that 3-hour period.

Allow the tires to cool before measuring tire pressure. Always make sure the tires are cold before inflating them to the recommended pressure.
