Lane Keep Assist (LKA)

~2min read
Hyundai Elantra. Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System

The Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) system helps detect lane markings on the road using the front view camera mounted on the windshield, and helps the driver steer the vehicle to keep it within the lane.

When the system detects that the vehicle is drifting out of its lane, it warns the driver with a visual and audible warning, and applies counter-steering torque to try to prevent the vehicle from leaving its lane.

WARNING

The Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) system does not replace safe driving practices and is only a convenience feature. It is always the driver's responsibility to watch the surroundings and control the vehicle.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions when using the Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) system:

  • Do not turn the steering wheel abruptly while the system is steering the steering wheel.
  • The LKA system helps prevent unintentional lane departure by assisting the driver in steering the vehicle. However, the driver must not rely solely on the system; always pay attention to the steering wheel to stay in the lane.
  • LKA system operation may be cancelled or may not function properly depending on road and surrounding conditions. Always drive with caution.
  • Do not disassemble the LKA system camera, temporarily tint the window, or attach any kind of covering or accessories. If the camera is disassembled and reassembled, take your vehicle to an authorized HYUNDAI dealer to have the system checked for calibration.
  • When replacing the windshield, the LKA system camera, or related steering wheel parts, take your vehicle to an authorized HYUNDAI dealer to have the system checked for calibration.
  • The system helps detect lane markings and controls the steering wheel using the camera, so if the markings are difficult to detect, the system may not function properly. Refer to the "System Limitations" section.
  • Do not remove or damage the related parts of the LKA system.
  • You may not hear the LKA system warning sound if the audio volume is high.
  • If another warning sound, such as the unbuckled seat belt chime, is already sounding, the Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) system warning may not sound.
  • Do not place light-reflecting items such as mirrors, information documents, etc. on the instrument panel. This may cause the LKA system to malfunction.
  • Always keep your hands on the steering wheel when the LKA system is activated. Also, when active LKA is selected in the user settings mode and you continue driving without keeping your hands on the steering wheel after the "Hands on Steering Wheel" warning message appears, the system will stop controlling the steering. However, if the driver places hands on the steering wheel again, the system will resume steering control.
  • Steering control is not provided continuously, so if the vehicle speed is high when leaving the lane, the vehicle may not be controlled by the system. The driver must always observe the speed limit when using the system.
  • If you attach items to the steering wheel, the system may not assist steering or the "Hands Off" warning may malfunction. When towing a trailer, make sure to turn off the LKA system.
