System Limitations

~7min read

The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system is designed to monitor the vehicle ahead or pedestrians in the roadway through radar signals and camera recognition, warn the driver of an unavoidable collision, and apply emergency braking if necessary.

In certain situations, the radar sensor or camera may not detect a vehicle or pedestrian ahead. In these cases, the FCA system may not operate normally. The driver should be especially attentive in the following situations, where FCA operation may be limited.

Vehicle Detection

The sensor may be limited when:

  • The radar sensor or camera is blocked by a foreign object or debris
  • Severe weather, such as heavy rain or snow, obstructs the field of view of the radar sensor or camera
  • There is electromagnetic wave interference
  • The vehicle is on a gravel or rough, uneven surface, or on a road with sudden changes in gradient
  • The vehicle is driven through a construction site, on a gravel road, or over metal materials such as railway tracks
  • The vehicle ahead is too small to be detected (e.g., a motorcycle, bicycle, etc.).
  • The camera field of view is poorly illuminated (either too dark, or excessive reflection or strong backlight obstructs the field of view).
  • The camera does not recognize the entire vehicle ahead.
  • The vehicle ahead is a large vehicle or trailer that is too large to be detected by the camera recognition system (e.g., a tractor trailer, etc.).
  • The vehicle ahead has no taillights, the taillights are not on, or the taillights are located unusually.
  • External brightness changes suddenly, such as when entering or exiting a tunnel.
  • The vehicle is driving inside a building, such as an underground parking garage.
  • Adverse road conditions cause excessive vehicle vibration while driving.
  • You are on a roundabout and the vehicle ahead is circling.
  • The camera lens is contaminated by tinted, film-coated, or coated windshield, damaged glass, or foreign objects stuck to the glass (stickers, insects, etc.).
  • The camera is damaged.
  • External brightness is too low, for example, when headlights are not on at night or the vehicle is driving through a tunnel.
  • Light from a street lamp or an oncoming vehicle is reflected on a wet road surface, such as a puddle on the road.
  • The forward field of view is restricted by sun glare.
  • A shadow falls on the road from the median strip, trees, etc.
  • The vehicle passes through a toll gate.
  • The windshield is fogged; a clear view of the road is obstructed.
  • Radar sensor/camera recognition is limited
  • The rear of the vehicle ahead is not normally visible (e.g., the vehicle is rotating or has overturned).
  • Strong uneven reflection from the radar sensor is present.
  • Sensor recognition changes suddenly when driving over a speed bump.
  • The vehicle ahead is driving erratically.
  • The vehicle ahead is moving laterally across the direction of travel.
  • The vehicle ahead is stopped across the direction of travel.
  • The vehicle ahead is moving toward your vehicle or is reversing.
Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

• Driving on curves

FCA operation may be limited when driving on a curved road.

This may cause the warning or braking to operate incorrectly or fail to operate.

In addition, in some cases the front radar sensor or camera recognition system may not detect a vehicle traveling on a winding road.

In these cases, the driver must maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

The FCA system may recognize a vehicle in an adjacent lane when driving on a curved road.

In this case, the system may warn the driver unnecessarily and apply the brakes.

Always pay attention to the road and driving conditions while driving. If necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

In addition, if necessary, depress the accelerator pedal to prevent the system from unnecessarily decelerating your vehicle.

Check the road conditions for safe operation of the FCA system.

Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

• Driving on slopes

FCA performance is reduced when driving uphill or downhill. It may not recognize a vehicle ahead in the same lane. It may unnecessarily issue a warning message and warning signal, or it may not issue a warning message and warning signal at all.

When FCA suddenly recognizes a vehicle ahead while driving on a slope, you may experience sudden deceleration.

Always look ahead when driving uphill or downhill and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain distance.

Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

• Lane changes

When a vehicle changes lanes in front of you, the FCA system may not detect the vehicle immediately, especially if it changes lanes abruptly. In this case, maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

When driving in stop-and-go traffic, or when a vehicle stopped ahead of you is merging out of your lane, the FCA system may not immediately detect the new vehicle ahead of you. In this case, maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, press the brake pedal to reduce speed and maintain a safe distance.

Hyundai Elantra. Limitations of the System

• Detection of the vehicle ahead

If the vehicle ahead has a load extending rearward from the cab, or if the vehicle ahead has a high ground clearance, additional special attention is required. The FCA system may not be able to detect a load extending from the vehicle. In such cases, maintain a safe braking distance from the rearmost object and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain distance.

Pedestrian Detection

The sensor may be limited when:

  • The camera recognition system may not fully recognize a pedestrian, for example, if the pedestrian is leaning or is not fully upright.
  • The pedestrian moves very quickly or suddenly appears within the camera detection zone.
  • The pedestrian is wearing clothing that easily blends with the background, making detection by the camera recognition system difficult.
  • If the bicycle material does not reflect radar well.
  • When a pedestrian or cyclist suddenly crosses in front of the vehicle.
  • When there is any other electromagnetic interference.
  • The external lighting is too bright (for example, when driving in bright sunlight) or too dark (for example, when driving on a dark rural road at night).
  • It is difficult to detect a pedestrian and distinguish them from other objects in the surroundings, for example, when there is a group of pedestrians or a large crowd.
  • There is an object resembling the shape of a human body.
  • The pedestrian is small.
  • The pedestrian has limited mobility.
  • Sensor recognition is limited.
  • The radar sensor or camera is blocked by a foreign object or debris
  • The camera lens is contaminated by tinted, film-coated, or coated windshield, damaged glass, or foreign objects stuck to the glass (stickers, insects, etc.).
  • The outside brightness is too low, for example, when the headlights are not on at night or the vehicle is driving through a tunnel.
  • Severe weather, such as heavy rain or snow, obstructs the field of view of the radar sensor or camera
  • When light from a street lamp or an oncoming vehicle is reflected on a wet road surface, such as a puddle on the road.
  • The forward field of view is restricted by sun glare.
  • The windshield is fogged; a clear view of the road is obstructed.
  • Adverse road conditions cause excessive vehicle vibration while driving.
  • Sensor recognition changes suddenly when driving over a speed bump.
  • You are driving on a roundabout.

Information

In some cases, the FCA system may be canceled due to electromagnetic interference.
