Radar Sensor for Detecting the Vehicle Ahead

~2min read
Hyundai Elantra. Sensor to Detect Distance to the Vehicle Ahead

Smart Cruise Control uses a radar sensor to detect the vehicle ahead.

If the sensor is covered with dirt or other foreign substances, the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control may not operate properly.

Always keep the sensor clean.

Warning Message

Hyundai Elantra. Sensor to Detect Distance to the Vehicle Ahead

Smart Cruise Control Disabled. Radar Blocked

When the radar sensor lens cover is blocked by dirt, snow, or debris, Smart Cruise Control operation may be temporarily stopped. In this case, a warning message will appear on the cluster LCD. Remove the dirt, snow, or debris and clean the radar sensor lens cover before using Smart Cruise Control. Smart Cruise Control may not activate properly if the radar is completely covered, or if any substance is not removed after the engine is started (for example, in outdoor terrain).

Information

If the radar is blocked, SCC operation is temporarily stopped. If you want to use the normal cruise control mode (speed-only control function), you must switch to cruise control mode (see "To Switch to Cruise Control Mode" on the next page).

CAUTION

  • Do not attach a license plate frame or foreign objects, such as a bumper sticker or bumper guard, near the radar sensor. This may adversely affect the radar sensor performance.
  • Always keep the radar sensor and lens cover clean and free of dirt and debris.
  • Use only a soft cloth when washing the vehicle. Do not spray water under high pressure directly at the sensor or sensor cover.
  • Be careful not to apply unnecessary force to the radar sensor or the sensor cover. If the sensor is forced out of its proper position, the Smart Cruise Control system may malfunction. In this case, a warning message may not appear. Have the vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
  • If the front bumper is damaged in the area of the radar sensor, the Smart Cruise Control system may not operate properly. Have the vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
  • Use only genuine HYUNDAI parts to repair or replace a damaged sensor or sensor cover. Do not paint the sensor cover.
