Steering Effort Inspection with Vehicle Stationary

1. Park the vehicle on a level, horizontal surface and set the steered wheels in the straight-ahead position.

2. Increase the engine speed to 900 - 1100 rpm.

After the check at the specified engine speed, return the engine to the normal idle speed.

3. Using a spring scale, measure the force required to turn the steering wheel left and right from the straight-ahead position (1.5 turns).

Steering wheel turning force [Standard value]:

29 N

4. Check that the steering effort does not change suddenly while turning the steering wheel.

5. If the measured steering effort exceeds the standard value, perform the following checks and adjustments:

a) Check the lower arm ball joint and steering tie rod end ball joint boots for cracks and damage.

b) Preload of the steering gear pinion bearing and rotating torque of the steering tie rod end ball joint.

c) Ball joint rotating torque.
