Description
EPB is an electronic parking brake. EPB differs from conventional parking systems that use a pedal or lever type. The EPB system sends a signal to the ECU when the driver presses the EPB switch. The ECU controls the EPB actuator, which consists of a motor and a reduction gear. Braking force is generated when the motor pulls the cable connected to the brake system. The EPB module is one of the components of the EPB system. It monitors signals from various sensors in the system, performs self-diagnosis, and controls the EPB system with programmed logic. Main function- Static Braking Mode: It monitors the operating and release status of the vehicle when the vehicle stops.
- Operating conditions: Pull the EPB switch regardless of the ignition ON/OFF status and with the brake pedal depressed. (Pull)
A. Vehicle speed <= 6 km/h - Release conditions: Press the EPB switch with the ignition ON and the brake pedal depressed (Push).
- Operating conditions: Pull the EPB switch regardless of the ignition ON/OFF status and with the brake pedal depressed. (Pull)
- Dynamic Brake Function (DBF): DBF is a braking function that can apply or release the EPB system while driving. This function is used when foreign objects get between the brake pedal or the brake hydraulic line does not operate.
- Operating conditions: It operates only when the vehicle speed is above 6 km/h and the EPB switch is pulled.
- Release condition: The system is released if the EPB switch is not pulled.
- Principle of Operation
A. ESC system is normal: EPB requests brake pressure from the ESC system. B. ESC system is abnormal: EPB applies the parking brake to reduce vehicle speed. - Special function: If the anti-lock brake system is operating, anti-lock brake control is performed, and the parking lamp on the instrument cluster continues to flash during emergency braking.
- DAR (Driveaway Release): For driver convenience, EPB is automatically released when the driver shifts from P to R/N/D/S with the brake applied. EPB is automatically released when the accelerator pedal is depressed in D/R/S mode and the following conditions are met.
- The driver's door must be closed and the seat belt must be fastened.
- The hood must be closed in D.
- The trunk must be closed in R.
- Bedding-in mode: You must perform the "Bedding-in process" to optimize initial EPB performance after replacing the parking brake pads and the rear brake disc. Bedding-in process
- Turn the ignition on and start the engine.
- Apply the foot brake 2 times within 10 seconds, and continue to apply the foot brake after the last application.
- Press the EPB switch 4 times, then release it 3 times within 10 seconds.
- The pads must be bedded in by six dynamic braking cycles from 30 ~ 35 km/h to a complete stop of the vehicle. (If the vehicle speed exceeds 50 km/h in sleeper mode, it turns off automatically.)
- After each braking cycle, a cooling period for the pads is required to prevent damage to them.
A. Cooling can be achieved by driving a distance of 500 m after each braking cycle without applying the EPB, or by holding the vehicle stationary for 1 minute after each braking event.
- Auto Hold helps keep the vehicle stopped by applying the hydraulic brake.
- Operating Conditions
A. Engine is running B. The Auto Hold switch is ON. C. The driver's door, hood and trunk lid must be closed. D. The seat belt is fastened. E. The shift lever is not in the P range. F. Upon reaching a complete stop by depressing the brake pedal. - The Auto Hold function keeps the vehicle stopped for no more than 10 minutes. The ESP valve maintains the stopped state, with the oil passage closed by depressing the brake pedal.
- Total Auto Hold operating time: 30 minutes max.
- Auto release function: Auto Hold mode is released when the driver starts to accelerate the vehicle by depressing the pedal in the D/S/R range.
- Automatic conversion from Auto Hold to EPB: Auto Hold automatically converts to EPB mode if any of the following conditions occur. [Normal conversion cases]
A. When the driver's door is opened and the seat belt is unfastened at the same time. B. When the hood is opened while the shift lever is in the D or S position. C. When the trunk is opened while the shift lever is in the R position. D. When the Auto Hold operating time exceeds 10 minutes.
[Abnormal conversion cases]E. Stopped on a 25 degree slope. A. When multiple detailed vehicle movements are detected. B. When a malfunction of the ESP hydraulic system is detected.

- Operating Conditions
- EPB warning lamp: The EPB warning lamp indicates that the EPB is released or malfunctioning. The EPB warning lamp illuminates in the following cases.
- The EPB warning lamp illuminates for 3 seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON. If the EPB system operates normally, the EPB warning lamp goes off. OFF
- If the EPB system does not operate properly, the EPB warning lamp illuminates.
- The EPB warning lamp illuminates in diagnostic mode.
- AUTO HOLD lamp / AUTO HOLD function lamp
- AUTO HOLD ON
A. The brake system operates automatically when the vehicle speed is "0", when parked or waiting at a red light, with the brake applied (AUTO HOLD function indicator: green). B. The brake system is released automatically when the accelerator pedal is depressed. (AUTO HOLD indicator: white) - AUTO HOLD switch OFF: The AUTO HOLD function does not operate.
- AUTO HOLD ON
