Starting the Engine
WARNING
- Always wear appropriate footwear when driving the vehicle. Unsuitable footwear, such as high heels, ski boots, sandals, flip-flops, etc., may interfere with the operation of the brake, accelerator, and clutch pedals.
- Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. The vehicle may move unexpectedly and cause an accident.
- Wait until the engine speed returns to normal. The vehicle may shift suddenly if you release the brake pedal while the engine speed is high.
Starting the Gasoline Engine
For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission:
1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
2. Make sure the shift lever is in the N (Neutral) position.
3. Depress the clutch pedal and the brake pedal.
4. Turn the ignition key to the START position. Hold it in this position until the engine starts (10 seconds maximum), then release the key.
For vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission:
1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
2. Make sure the shift lever is in P (Park).
3. Depress the brake pedal.
4. Turn the ignition key to the START position. Hold it in this position until the engine starts (10 seconds maximum), then release the key.
Intelligent
- Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle is stopped. Start driving at a moderate speed. (Avoid acceleration and sudden braking.)
- Always start the vehicle with your foot on the brake pedal. Never start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. Do not race the engine while it is warming up.
Starting the Diesel Engine
To start the diesel engine when the engine is cold, the engine must be preheated before starting, and then warmed up before driving the vehicle.
For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission:
1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
2. Make sure the shift lever is in the N (Neutral) position.
3. Depress the clutch pedal and the brake pedal.
4. Turn the ignition key to the ON position to preheat the engine. The indicator light (
) illuminates during preheating.
5. When the (
) indicator light goes off, turn the ignition key to the START position. Hold it in this position until the engine starts (10 seconds maximum), then release the key.
Intelligent
If the engine does not start within 10 seconds after preheating, turn the ignition key to LOCK and wait 10 seconds. Then turn the ignition key to the ON position to preheat the engine again.
Starting and Stopping a Turbocharged Engine
1. Start moving gently or accelerate gradually. Do not apply heavy engine load immediately after starting the engine.
If the engine is cold, drive at low speed for a few seconds until the turbocharger is sufficiently lubricated.
2. After driving at high speed or after prolonged driving that places a heavy load on the engine, let the engine idle for about 1 minute before turning off the ignition.
This idle time allows the turbocharger to cool down before the engine is turned off.
NOTICE
Do not turn off the engine immediately after it has been under load. This is important. Otherwise, you risk damaging or seriously damaging the turbocharger.
NOTICE
To avoid damage to the vehicle:
- Do not hold the ignition key in the ON position for more than 10 seconds. Wait 5 to 10 seconds before making another attempt.
- Do not turn the ignition key to the START position while the engine is running. This may damage the starter.
- If traffic and road conditions permit, you may place the shift lever in the N (Neutral) position while the vehicle is still moving and turn the key to the START position to attempt to restart the engine.
- Do not push or tow the vehicle to start the engine.
