Opening the Tailgate

■ 5-door, wagon

■ Fastback

Make sure the vehicle is in P (Park) and set the parking brake.

Then perform one of the following:

1. Unlock all doors using the door unlock button on the remote key or smart key. Press the tailgate handle button and open the liftgate.

2. Press and hold the trunk unlock button on the key fob or smart key. Press the button on the liftgate handle and open the liftgate.

3. With the smart key on you, press the liftgate handle button and open the liftgate.

Closing the Tailgate

Lower the liftgate and press until it latches. To make sure the liftgate is securely latched, always check by trying to pull it up without pressing the liftgate handle button.

WARNING

Always keep the liftgate fully closed while the vehicle is in motion. If it is left open or partially open, poisonous exhaust gases containing carbon monoxide (CO) may enter the vehicle and cause serious illness or death.

Information

To avoid damage to the liftgate lift cylinders and hinges, always close the liftgate before driving.

NOTICE

In cold and humid climates, the liftgate lock and latch mechanisms may not operate properly due to freezing conditions.

WARNING

Do not hold the part (gas strut) that supports the liftgate. Deformation of this part may cause vehicle damage and create a safety hazard.

WARNING

• NEVER allow anyone to ride in the cargo area of the vehicle at any time. If the liftgate is partially or fully latched and a person cannot get out, serious injury or death may result from lack of ventilation, exhaust gas and rapid heat build-up, or from exposure to cold weather conditions. The cargo area is also a very dangerous place to ride in a crash because it is not a protected living space, but part of the vehicle crush zone.
• Keep your vehicle locked and keep the keys out of reach of children. Parents should teach their children about the dangers of playing in cargo areas.
