Steering Wheel

Electric Power Steering (EPS)

The system assists you in steering the vehicle. If the engine is off or if the power steering system stops working, the vehicle can still be steered, but more steering effort will be required.

In addition, steering effort becomes heavier as vehicle speed increases and becomes lighter as vehicle speed decreases for better control of the steering wheel.

If you notice any change in the effort required to steer during normal vehicle operation, we recommend that the system be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI service center.

NOTICE

  • If the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system does not operate normally, the warning light (Hyundai i30. Steering wheel) will illuminate or flash on the instrument cluster. The steering wheel may become difficult to control or operate. Take your vehicle to an authorized HYUNDAI service center and have the system checked as soon as possible.
  • If an abnormality is detected in the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system, the steering assist function will stop to prevent a fatal accident. At this time, the warning light will illuminate or flash on the cluster. The steering wheel may become difficult to control or operate. Have your vehicle checked immediately after moving the vehicle to a safe area.

Information

The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:

  • Steering effort may be high immediately after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position. This occurs while the system performs the EPS system diagnosis. When the diagnosis is complete, the steering wheel will return to its normal condition.
  • A clicking sound may be heard from the EPS relay after the ignition switch is turned to the ON or LOCK/OFF position.
  • A motor noise may be heard when the vehicle is parked or driven at low speed.
  • When you operate the steering wheel at low temperatures, an abnormal noise may occur. If the temperature rises, the noise will disappear. This is a normal condition.
  • When the vehicle is stationary, if you turn the steering wheel continuously to the left or right, steering effort increases. This is not a system malfunction. Over time, steering effort will return to normal.
