Parking Brake

~2min read

Always apply the parking brake before leaving the vehicle to engage:

Firmly depress the brake pedal.

Pull the parking brake lever up as far as possible.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH, do not use the parking brake while the vehicle is moving, except in an emergency. This may damage the brake system and cause an accident.

To release:

Firmly depress the brake pedal.

Pull the parking brake lever up slightly.

Press the release button (1) and lower the parking brake (2).

If the parking brake does not release or does not fully release, we recommend that the system be inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

WARNING

  • Whenever leaving the vehicle or parking, always come to a complete stop and continue to press the brake pedal. Move the shift lever to 1st gear (for vehicles with a manual transmission) or P (Park, for vehicles with a dual clutch transmission), then apply the parking brake and place the ignition key in the LOCK/OFF position. Vehicles with the parking brake not fully applied risk unintended movement and may cause injury to yourself or others.
  • When parking on a slope, chock the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling downhill.
  • NEVER allow anyone unfamiliar with the vehicle to touch the parking brake. Unintentional release of the parking brake may result in serious injury.
  • Release the parking brake only when you are seated in the vehicle with your foot firmly on the brake pedal.

NOTICE

  • Do not depress the accelerator pedal with the parking brake applied. If you depress the accelerator pedal with the parking brake applied, a warning sound will be heard. Damage to the parking brake may occur.
  • Driving with the parking brake applied may overheat the brake system and cause premature wear or damage to brake system components. Make sure the parking brake is released and the brake system warning light is off before driving.

Check the parking brake indicator light by turning the ignition switch to the ON position (do not start the engine).

This indicator illuminates when the parking brake is applied with the ignition switch in the ON or START position.

Before driving, make sure the parking brake is released and the brake system warning light is off.

If the parking brake indicator remains illuminated after releasing the parking brake with the engine running, there may be a malfunction in the brake system. Immediate attention is required.

If possible, stop driving the vehicle immediately. If this is not possible, exercise extreme caution when operating the vehicle and continue driving only until you reach a safe location.
