Trailer Towing Maintenance
Your vehicle will require maintenance more often when you regularly tow a trailer. Important items to pay attention to include engine oil, automatic transmission fluid, axle lubricant, and engine coolant. Brake condition is another important item to check frequently. If you tow a trailer, it is a good idea to review these items before you start your trip. Do not forget to also maintain your trailer and hitch. Follow the maintenance schedule that came with your trailer and inspect it periodically. Preferably, inspect the vehicle and trailer at the start of each day of driving. Inspect the hitch to make sure it is securely attached to the vehicle. Inspect the trailer wiring harness to make sure the brake lights, turn signal lights, running lights, and hazard warning lights operate properly.
NOTICE
To avoid damage to the vehicle:
- Due to the higher load during trailer operation, overheating may occur in hot weather or when driving uphill. If the coolant temperature gauge indicates overheating, turn off the air conditioner and stop the vehicle in a safe place to cool down the engine.
- When towing, check the automatic transmission fluid more frequently.
