Towing a Trailer
If you plan to tow a trailer, you must first check with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles to determine the legal requirements. Because laws vary from state to state, the requirements for towing trailers, vehicles, or other types of vehicles or devices may differ. Ask an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for more information before towing.
Remember that towing a trailer is different from driving the vehicle by itself. Towing means changes in handling, durability and fuel economy. Successful and safe towing requires the proper equipment, and it must be used correctly. Damage to your vehicle caused by improper trailer towing is not covered by the vehicle manufacturer's warranty.
This section contains many time-tested, important trailer towing tips and safety rules. Many of them are important for your safety and the safety of your passengers. Please read this section carefully before towing a trailer.
WARNING
Observe the following precautions:
- If you do not use the correct towing equipment, or if you drive incorrectly while towing, you may lose control of your vehicle while towing a trailer. For example, if the trailer is too heavy, braking effectiveness may be reduced. You and your passengers may be seriously or fatally injured. Tow a trailer only after you have completed all the steps in this section.
- Before towing, make sure that the gross trailer weight, GCW (gross combined weight), GVW (gross vehicle weight), GAW (gross axle weight) and the trailer tongue load are all within limits.
- When towing a trailer, be sure to turn off the Idle Stop and Go system.
