Winter Precautions
Use High-Quality Ethylene Glycol Coolant
Your vehicle is delivered with a high-quality, ethylene glycol-based engine coolant. This is the only type of coolant that should be used, because it helps prevent corrosion in the cooling system, lubricates the water pump, and prevents freezing. Be sure to replace or add coolant according to the maintenance schedule in Chapter 7. Before winter, test the coolant to make sure its freezing point is sufficient for the temperatures expected during winter.
Change to "Winter" Oil if Necessary
In some climates, it is recommended that a lower viscosity "winter grade" oil be used in cold weather. Refer to Chapter 8 for recommendations. If you are not sure which oil viscosity you should use, consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Check the Battery and Cables
Winter places additional demands on the battery system. Visually inspect the battery and cables as described in Chapter 7. The battery charge level can be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer or service station.
Check the Spark Plugs and Ignition System
Inspect the spark plugs as described in Chapter 7 and replace them if necessary. Also check all ignition wiring and components to make sure they are not cracked, worn, or damaged in any way.
Use approved windshield washer antifreeze in the system
To prevent the washer water from freezing in the washer system, add an approved windshield washer antifreeze solution according to the instructions on the container. Windshield washer antifreeze is available from an authorized HYUNDAI dealer and most auto parts stores. Do not use engine coolant or other types of antifreeze, as they may damage the paint.
Do not allow the parking brake to freeze
Under certain conditions, your parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This is most likely to occur when snow or ice accumulates around or near the rear brakes, or if the brakes are wet. If there is a risk that the parking brake may freeze, apply it only temporarily while you shift into P and block the rear wheels so the vehicle does not roll. Then release the parking brake.
Do not allow ice and snow to accumulate under
Under some conditions, snow and ice can build up under the fenders and interfere with steering. When driving in severe winter conditions where this may occur, periodically check under the vehicle to make sure the front wheels and steering components are not obstructed.
Do not place foreign objects or materials in the engine compartment.
Placing foreign objects or materials that obstruct engine cooling in the engine compartment may result in malfunction or fire. The manufacturer is not responsible for damage caused by such placement.
To Prevent Door Locks from Freezing
To prevent the locks from freezing, spray an approved anti-icing fluid or glycerin into the key opening. If the lock is iced over, spray it with an approved de-icing fluid to remove the ice. If the lock is frozen internally, you may thaw it using a heated key. Use caution when handling the heated key to avoid injury.
