Description

The power liftgate system is an electromechanical system that can open and automatically close the liftgate using local switches (the liftgate interior switch and the outside handle switch) and the wireless remote transmitter (FOB), or it can stop the liftgate. The Power Tailgate Module (PTGM) sends and receives vehicle information through the BCM, instrument cluster, SJB and CAN communication to determine liftgate opening/closing and perform self-diagnosis. A safety function changes direction when an obstacle is detected during operation. If power mode is turned off due to low battery voltage or the Power Tailgate Module (PTGM) is deactivated, manual opening/closing is possible using the emergency lever on the liftgate latch after unlocking the liftgate. Liftgate Position and Direction: The PTG system measures the liftgate position using the Hall sensor integrated in the spindle drive motor. In addition, the liftgate travel direction can be confirmed by analyzing the spindle rotation direction. The Hall sensor signal counter (position confirmation) is valid in power operation mode and in general operation mode. The PTG automatic operation mode can be changed to manual operation mode by changing the settings in the instrument cluster. COMPONENTS
  1. Power Tailgate Module (PTGM)
The PTGM is installed inside the left side of the liftgate trim panel. The PTGM controls the two spindle drive motors. It also monitors the anti-pinch function by analyzing the Hall effect sensor and the anti-pinch sensor in the spindle.
  2. PTG Lock Assembly
The PTG lock hardware includes the electric latch (A) and the electric locking unit (B). The PTG lock hardware is installed at the end of the liftgate and operates in power lock/unlock mode under the control of the PTGM.
  3. PTG Latch
The PTG latch controls opening and closing of the liftgate using torque from the motor inside the spindle. Recognizes the liftgate travel direction by sending a rotation direction signal from the spindle motor to the PTGM.
  4. Anti-Pinch Strip Assembly
The anti-pinch strip (APS) is installed on the right and left sides of the liftgate and detects object entrapment during power closing of the liftgate. When entrapment is detected, the PTGM immediately reverses the liftgate to the fully open position. The anti-pinch strip does not operate when the liftgate is fully closed or fully open, in a stationary state, or while opening.
  5. Wireless Transmitter
The liftgate starts the auxiliary opening function when the liftgate open button on the wireless transmitter is pressed for more than 1.0 second. If the button is pressed briefly while the power liftgate is opening or closing, the power liftgate stops moving. If the button is pressed for 1.0 second while the power liftgate is opening or closing, the power liftgate reverses its direction.
  6. Lower Trim Pad Switch
If the lower trim pad switch is pressed for 1.0 second, the liftgate activates the closing function or the auxiliary opening function. If the lower trim pad switch is pressed briefly while the power liftgate is opening or closing, the power liftgate stops moving. If the lower trim pad switch is pressed for 1.0 second while the power liftgate is opening or closing, the power liftgate reverses its direction.
  7. Power Liftgate Interior Switch
If the switch inside the liftgate is pressed, the power closing function of the liftgate is activated.
  8. Power Liftgate Chime
When an obstacle is detected or a power function is performed incorrectly, contrary to user commands, the buzzer sounds 3 times. When the power function is performed correctly, the buzzer sounds twice.

Principle of Operation

Power Liftgate Opening
The signal from the main switch is sent to the PTGM via CAN (sent by SJB). PTGM Opening Process
  1. Opening starts after receiving signals from the lower trim pad switch, the liftgate handle switch, or the wireless remote transmitter (FOB).
  2. The latch motor unlocks the liftgate by releasing the latch. (via SJB).
  3. To open the liftgate, the PTG module activates the spindle motors of the liftgate.
  4. The speed of the spindle motors is monitored by the Hall sensor in the motor.
  5. The liftgate opening angle is calculated from the number of pulses of the Hall sensor.
  6. Closing starts after receiving a signal from the driver's console switch, the interior tailgate switch, or the wireless remote control (FOB).
  7. To close the tailgate, the PTGM operates the spindle motors.
  8. The PTGM monitors the tailgate closing angle by counting pulses from the Hall sensors.
  9. The tailgate latch engages the striker, and if the weatherstrip sealing force is not too weak, the latch is in the half-latched position. (Full open latch → half latch)
  10. After receiving the half-latch switch signal from the latch, the PTGM stops the tailgate spindle motor.
  11. The PTGM supplies voltage to the PCU, and the PCU performs adjustment until the PTGM receives the full-latch signal.
  12. The tailgate is fully closed and the latch is fully locked.
  13. Maximum opening position: Moving the tailgate beyond this position makes the tailgate go beyond the maximum base position and overloads the mechanical system (hinge). Therefore, opening movement beyond this position is not possible. However, if movement is started from the lower position, the tailgate passes beyond this point.
  14. Learned mechanical end position: The mechanical end position is the mechanical limit position and is considered 100% open. This position is learned during the first opening of the tailgate. After learning, the tailgate no longer extends beyond the maximum base position, which is defined as the planned idle time. All positions are set by parameters assigned to the ECU.
  15. After learning the mechanical end position, the user base position is taken as the maximum base position.
    • The user can change the learned base position to any other position (within the range between the maximum closing position and the maximum base position).
    • If the user wants to move the new base position below the old base position, the user must move the tailgate automatically or manually to the new position and press the interior tailgate switch for five seconds. (Time may vary depending on settings.)
    • If the user wishes to adjust the tailgate position above the maximum base position, the ECU sets the base position as the maximum base position.
Power Liftgate Closing. PTGM Closing Procedure: Learning/Calculation/Position Program. Maximum Opening Programming (Garage Position). System Parameter. Before guaranteeing normal operation, mechanical tolerance and adjustment on the vehicle production line, and correction of the power liftgate travel range. From the end point that occurs mechanically when the liftgate is fully closed (latch locked), the maximum travel range of the liftgate in operation is expressed as the number of pulse signals from the spindle speed and position Hall sensor sent to the ECU.
