Hood Opening

1. Park the vehicle and set the parking brake.

2. Pull the hood release lever to unlatch the hood. The hood should open slightly.

3. Go to the front of the vehicle, lift the hood slightly, lift the secondary latch (1) inside the center of the hood, and lift the hood.

4. Lift the hood support rod.

5. Insert the end of the hood support rod into the slot on the hood (3).

WARNING

• Grasp the hood support rod at the rubber-covered area when the engine is hot. The rubber portion will insulate heat and protect you from burns or injury.
• The end of the hood support rod must be fully inserted into the hood slot whenever you are checking the engine compartment. This prevents the hood from falling and possibly injuring you.

Hood Closing

1. Before closing the hood, check around the engine compartment and make sure of the following:

- Remove any tools or other loose items from the engine compartment area or hood opening area
- Remove all gloves, rags, or other flammable material from the engine compartment
- Make sure all filler caps are tightly closed and properly installed

2. Return the hood support rod to the clip so that it does not rattle.

3. Lower the hood to about 30 cm (12 in.) above the closed position and let it drop. Make sure it latches in place.

4. Make sure the hood is latched. If the hood can be lifted slightly, it is not properly latched. Open the hood again and close it with slightly more force.

WARNING

• Before closing the hood, make sure all obstacles are cleared from around the hood opening.
• Always double-check that the hood is securely latched before driving. Check that the hood open warning light or message is not displayed on the instrument cluster. Driving with the hood open may result in a complete loss of visibility, which may cause an accident.
• Do not drive the vehicle with the hood open, as visibility is obstructed, which may lead to an accident, and the hood may fall or be damaged.
