Electronic Power Steering (EPS)

The Electric Power Steering (EPS) system assists you in steering the vehicle. If the vehicle is turned off or if the power steering system fails, you can still steer the vehicle, but it will require greater steering effort.

If you notice any change in the effort required to steer during normal vehicle operation, have the system checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

PLEDGE

If the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system does not operate normally, the warning light and the "Check Electric Power Steering" message will illuminate on the instrument cluster. You can still steer the vehicle, but it will require increased steering effort. Have your vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer or service station as soon as possible.

Information

The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:

  • Steering wheel effort may be high immediately after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position. This occurs while the system performs an EPS system diagnosis. When the diagnosis is complete, the steering wheel effort will return to its normal condition.
  • When battery voltage is low, you may need to apply more effort to the steering wheel. However, this is a temporary condition, and it will return to normal after the battery is charged.
  • A clicking sound may be heard from the EPS relay after the ignition switch is turned to the ON or LOCK/OFF position.
  • A motor noise may be heard when the vehicle is parked or driven at low speed.
  • When you operate the steering wheel at low temperatures, an abnormal noise may occur. If the temperature rises, the noise will disappear. This is a normal condition.
  • If a malfunction is detected in the EPS, the steering assist function will not activate to prevent a fatal accident. Warning lights may illuminate on the instrument cluster or the steering wheel effort may be heavy. If these symptoms occur, drive the vehicle to a safe location as soon as it is safe to do so. Have the system inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.
