Parking on a Slope
In general, if you are towing a trailer, avoid parking the vehicle on a slope.
However, if you must park on a slope, take the following precautions:
1. Drive the vehicle to the parking location. Turn the steering wheel toward the curb (left when facing uphill, right when facing downhill).
2. Shift the shift lever to P (Park) if your vehicle has an automatic transmission, or to Neutral if it has a manual transmission.
3. Apply the parking brake and turn off the engine.
4. Place wheel chocks under the wheels of the trailer located on the lower side of the slope.
5. Start the engine, depress the brake pedal, release the parking brake, and slowly release the brake pedal until the chocks hold the weight of the vehicle.
6. Depress the brake pedal again and reapply the parking brake.
7. Shift the shift lever to P (automatic transmission) or to 1st gear when parked facing uphill, and to R (Reverse) when parked facing downhill (manual transmission).
8. Turn off the engine and release the brake, but do not release the parking brake.
WARNING
To avoid serious injury or death:
- Do not leave the vehicle until the parking brake is firmly engaged. If the engine is left running, the vehicle may move unexpectedly and cause serious or fatal injury.
- Do not use the accelerator pedal to hold the vehicle in place on a slope.
