Checking the Coolant Level

~2min read

Inspect the condition and connections of all cooling and heating system hoses. Replace any damaged or swollen hoses.

With the engine cold, the coolant level should be between the MAX and MIN marks on the reservoir.

If the coolant level is low, add the required amount of distilled (demineralized) water. Fill the reservoir to the MAX mark without overfilling.

If you need to add coolant frequently, we recommend having the system checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

WARNING

Remove the coolant reservoir cap

  • Never try to remove the coolant reservoir cap while the engine is running or still hot. You may damage the cooling system and engine, and may cause serious injury from steam or hot coolant.
  • Stop the engine and wait until it cools down. Be extremely careful when removing the coolant reservoir cap. Wrap it with a thick cloth and carefully turn it counterclockwise until it reaches the first stop.
Move away while pressure is released from the cooling system. When you are sure all pressure has been released, press down on the cap with the cloth, then continue turning it counterclockwise to remove it.
  • Even if the engine is off, do not remove the coolant reservoir cap or drain plug. The engine and radiator are still hot. Boiling coolant and steam may be released under pressure and cause serious injury.

WARNING

The electric cooling fan (motor) is controlled by the engine coolant temperature, refrigerant pressure, and vehicle speed. It may sometimes operate with the engine off. Be extremely careful when working near the fan blades to avoid injury. When the engine coolant temperature drops, the electric fan motor stops automatically. This is normal.

The electric cooling fan (motor) may continue to operate until you disconnect the negative battery cable.

WARNING

Make sure the coolant reservoir cap is securely closed after filling the reservoir. Otherwise, the engine may overheat while driving.

■ Front view of engine compartment

1. Make sure the label on the coolant reservoir cap is in place and clearly visible.

■ Rear view of engine compartment

2. Make sure the small protrusions on the inside of the coolant reservoir cap are installed correctly.
