Exhaust Emission Control System
The high-efficiency exhaust emission control system controls exhaust gas composition while maintaining good vehicle driving performance.
Vehicle Modifications
• Do not modify this vehicle.
Modifications may adversely affect vehicle performance, safety or service life. In some cases, they may even violate government regulations concerning safety and emission limits.
In addition, damage or reduced performance caused by any modification is not covered by the warranty.
• Use of unapproved electronic devices may cause vehicle malfunction, wiring damage, battery discharge and fire. For your own safety, be careful.
Precautions Regarding Engine Exhaust Gas (Carbon Monoxide)
• Carbon monoxide may be present among other exhaust gases.
Therefore, if you notice any smell of exhaust gas inside your vehicle, have the vehicle inspected and repaired immediately. If you suspect that exhaust gas is entering the passenger compartment, driving the vehicle is permitted only with all windows open. In this case, the vehicle must also be inspected and repaired immediately.
WARNING
- Exhaust gas
Engine exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide (CO).
Although it has no color and no odor, it is hazardous and can cause death if inhaled. To avoid CO poisoning, follow the instructions listed below.
• Do not run the engine in enclosed areas (such as garages) longer than necessary to enter or exit the area.
• If the vehicle is parked in an open area with the engine running for a long period, adjust the ventilation system (as necessary) to draw outside air into the passenger compartment.
• Do not remain in a parked or stopped vehicle with the engine running for extended periods.
• If the engine stalls or fails to start, excessive attempts to start the engine may damage the emission control system.
Precautions Related to the Catalytic Converter (if equipped)
WARNING
- Fire
• Hot exhaust gases may ignite flammable materials located under the vehicle floor. Do not park, idle, or drive the vehicle over or near flammable materials such as grass, plants, paper, leaves, etc.
• The exhaust system and catalytic converter become extremely hot while the engine is running and remain hot immediately after the engine is stopped. Be careful to avoid burns that may occur when touching these systems.
Also, do not remove the exhaust system heat shield, do not cover the underbody, and do not apply rustproofing coatings to the underside of the vehicle.
Under certain conditions, this may cause a fire.
Your vehicle is equipped with a catalytic converter to limit exhaust emissions.
Therefore, observe the following precautions:
• Use only UNLEADED GASOLINE (for vehicles with a gasoline engine).
• Stop driving the vehicle if signs of engine malfunction appear, such as engine misfire or a noticeable loss of vehicle performance.
• Do not operate the engine outside of specified conditions. Examples of such conditions include coasting with the ignition switched off and descending steep slopes in gear with the ignition switched off.
• Do not leave the engine idling for extended periods (more than five minutes).
• Do not modify the design or operating characteristics of any engine or emission control system component.
All inspections and adjustments of the vehicle components must be performed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
• Avoid driving the vehicle with a very low fuel level. A low fuel level may cause engine misfire, which places excessive load on the catalytic converter.
Failure to follow these instructions may damage the catalytic converter and the vehicle as a whole. In addition, such actions may void the warranty.
