The DEF gauge (located in the instrument cluster display) will show the DEF level remaining in the tank.

NOTE:

Driving conditions (altitude, vehicle speed, load, etc.) will affect the amount of DEF used by your vehicle.

DEF Filling Procedure

NOTE:

Use the correct type of DEF fluid.

  1. Remove the cap from the DEF filler neck (located in the fuel filler door).

  2. Insert the DEF fill nozzle/adapter into the DEF filler neck.

    NOTE:

    • The DEF gauge may take up to five seconds to update after adding a gallon or more of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to the DEF tank. If there is a fault related to the DEF system, the gauge may not update to the new level. Contact an authorized dealer for service.
    • The DEF gauge may also not update immediately after refilling if the DEF temperature is below 12°F (-11°C). The DEF tank heater may need to thaw the DEF and allow the gauge to update after a period of driving. In very cold conditions, the gauge may not reflect the new fill level for several drive cycles.
    • Overfilling the DEF tank may cause the MIL light/fault code and an inaccurate level reading.

    Filling with Nozzles

You can refill at any DEF distributor.

    Proceed as follows:

    • Insert the DEF nozzle into the filler neck, start filling and stop filling at the first automatic shut-off (shut-off indicates the DEF tank is full). Do not continue filling to prevent DEF leakage.
    • Remove the nozzle.

    Filling from Containers

    Proceed as follows:

    • Check the expiration date.
    • Read the application instructions on the label before pouring the contents of the bottle into the DEF tank.
    • If containers that cannot be screwed on (such as cans) are used for refilling after the display indication appears on the instrument panel, see page 110, fill the DEF tank with no more than 2 gallons (8 liters).
    • If containers that can be screwed onto the filler neck are used, stop pouring when the DEF level in the container reaches the tank's full level. Do not continue further.
    • To avoid spilling DEF and possible damage to the DEF tank from overfilling, do not "top off" the DEF tank after filling.
    • DO NOT OVERFILL. DEF will freeze below 12ºF (-11ºC). The DEF system is designed to operate at temperatures below the DEF freezing point; however, if the tank is overfilled and freezes, the system may be damaged.
    • If DEF is spilled, immediately clean the area with water and use absorbent material to soak up spills on the ground.
    • Do not attempt to start the engine if DEF has accidentally been added to the diesel fuel tank, as this may cause serious damage to your engine, including but not limited to fuel pump and injector failure.
    • Never add anything other than DEF to the tank, especially any form of hydrocarbon such as diesel fuel, fuel system additives, gasoline, or any other petroleum product. Even a very small amount, less than 100 parts per million or less than 1 oz. in 78 gallons (295 liters), will contaminate the entire DEF system and require replacement. If the owner uses a container, funnel, or nozzle when filling the tank, it must be either new or one that has only been used for adding DEF. Mopar® provides an attachable nozzle with its DEF for this purpose.
  3. Immediately stop filling the DEF tank when any of the following occurs: DEF stops flowing from the filling bottle into the DEF filler opening, DEF splashes out of the filler opening, or the DEF pump nozzle shuts off automatically.
  4. Install the cap on the DEF filler opening.
