The Engine Start/Stop System (ESS) is designed to reduce fuel consumption. The system will automatically stop the engine when the vehicle is stopped, if the required conditions are met. Releasing the brake pedal or pressing the accelerator pedal will automatically restart the engine.

ESS-equipped vehicles have been upgraded with a heavy-duty starter, a reinforced battery, and other upgraded engine components to handle the additional engine starts. Vehicles equipped with eTorque contain a powerful motor-generator and an additional hybrid electric energy storage battery to store energy from vehicle deceleration for use in engine restarts after a stop, as well as to provide torque-assist starting.

NOTE:

It is recommended that the Stop/Start system be turned off when driving off-road.

Secondary Battery

Your vehicle may be equipped with a secondary battery, used to power the Stop/Start system and the 12-volt electrical system. The secondary battery is located behind the front passenger-side wheel.
