Integrated Drive Mode Control System

DRIVE MODE

The drive mode can be selected according to the driver's preference or road conditions.

The mode changes each time the DRIVE MODE button is pressed.

  • SMART Mode: SMART mode automatically adjusts the drive mode (ECO, COMFORT, SPORT) according to the driver's driving style.
  • COMFORT Mode: COMFORT mode provides smooth driving and a comfortable ride.
  • SPORT Mode: SPORT mode provides sporty but confident driving.
  • ECO Mode: ECO mode improves fuel economy for environmentally friendly driving.

If the vehicle is in ECO mode, ECO mode will be set when the engine is restarted.

(However, if the vehicle is in SMART/COMFORT/SPORT mode, the drive mode will be set to COMFORT mode when the engine is restarted.)

SMART Mode

SMART mode selects the appropriate drive mode among ECO, COMFORT and SPORT by judging the driver's driving style (i.e., gentle or dynamic) from brake pedal or steering wheel operation.

  • Press the DRIVE MODE button to activate SMART mode. When SMART mode is activated, the indicator on the instrument cluster will illuminate.
  • The indicator illuminates blue when the driver's driving is classified as gentle. It illuminates white when the driver is classified as comfortable. It illuminates red when the driver is classified as dynamic, such as with sudden braking or sharp cornering.
  • The vehicle starts in COMFORT mode when the engine was turned OFF in SMART mode.
  • SMART mode automatically controls vehicle driving elements such as shift patterns, engine torque, ride characteristics (if equipped with electronic suspension), and power distribution (if equipped with AWD (All-Wheel Drive)), according to the driver's driving style.

✽ NOTICE

  • When you drive smoothly in SMART mode, the drive mode changes to ECO mode to improve fuel efficiency. However, actual fuel efficiency may vary depending on your driving conditions (i.e., uphill/downhill slopes, vehicle deceleration/acceleration).
  • When you drive dynamically in SMART mode with rapid deceleration or sharp cornering, the drive mode changes to SPORT mode. However, this may adversely affect fuel economy.

Various road conditions you may encounter in SMART mode

  • The drive mode automatically changes to ECO mode after a certain period of time when you gently press the accelerator pedal (your driving is classified as smooth).
  • The drive mode automatically changes from SMART ECO mode to SMART COMFORT mode after a certain period of time when you depress the accelerator pedal suddenly or repeatedly.
  • The drive mode automatically changes to SMART COMFORT mode with the same driving patterns when the vehicle starts driving up a slope at a certain angle. The drive mode automatically returns to SMART ECO mode when the vehicle enters a level road.
  • The drive mode automatically changes to SMART SPORT when you accelerate the vehicle rapidly or steer the steering wheel repeatedly (your driving is classified as sporty). In this mode, your vehicle downshifts during rapid acceleration/deceleration and increases engine braking performance.
  • You may still feel engine braking even when you release the accelerator pedal in SMART SPORT mode. This is because your vehicle remains in a lower gear for a certain period of time in preparation for the next acceleration. This is a comfortable driving situation and does not indicate any malfunction.
  • The drive mode automatically changes to SMART SPORT mode only in severe road conditions. In most comfortable driving situations, the drive mode is set to either SMART ECO mode or SMART COMFORT mode.

SMART Mode Limitation

SMART mode may be limited in the following situations. (The OFF indicator illuminates in these situations.)

  • The driver manually moves the shift lever: SMART mode is deactivated. The vehicle operates as the driver manually moves the shift lever.
  • Cruise control activated: The cruise control system may cancel SMART mode. When the speed is set by the cruise control system, it starts controlling vehicle speed and deactivates SMART mode. (SMART mode is not canceled simply by activating the cruise control system.)
  • Transmission fluid temperature is either extremely low or extremely high: SMART mode may be active in most comfortable driving situations. However, very high or very low transmission fluid temperature may temporarily deactivate SMART mode, because the transmission condition is outside comfortable operating conditions.

SPORT Mode

SPORT mode focuses on dynamic driving by automatically controlling the steering, engine and transmission systems.

  • When the DRIVE MODE button is pressed and SPORT mode is selected, the SPORT indicator (yellow) will illuminate.
  • When SPORT mode is active and the ENGINE START/STOP button is turned off, the mode changes to COMFORT mode. To turn SPORT mode on again, press the DRIVE MODE button once more.
  • If the system is activated:
    - After exceeding the speed, the gear and engine speed are maintained for some time even if the accelerator pedal is not pressed.
    - Upshifting is delayed.
  • The steering wheel and suspension can be optimized for sporty handling and firm ride by ECS.

✽ NOTICE

In SPORT mode, fuel economy may decrease.

ECO Mode

When the drive mode is set to ECO mode, the control logic of the engine and transmission is changed for maximum fuel efficiency.

  • When ECO mode is selected by pressing the DRIVE MODE button, the ECO indicator (green) will illuminate.
  • If the vehicle is in ECO mode when the engine is turned off and restarted, the drive mode setting will remain in ECO mode.

✽ NOTICE

Fuel efficiency depends on driving habits, driving style and road conditions.

When ECO mode is activated:

  • Acceleration response may be slightly reduced if the accelerator pedal is depressed moderately.
  • Air conditioner performance may be limited.
  • The automatic transmission shift pattern may change.
  • Engine noise may become louder.

The above situations are comfortable conditions when ECO mode is enabled to improve fuel efficiency.

ECO Mode Operation Limitation:

If the system operation is limited while ECO mode is active, even though the ECO indicator has not changed.

  • When the engine coolant temperature is low: The system will limit engine power until the engine reaches a comfortable temperature.
  • When driving uphill: The system will be limited in obtaining power when driving uphill because engine torque is limited.
  • When driving the vehicle with the automatic transmission shift lever in manual mode, the system will be limited according to the shift point.
