What to Do in an Emergency

Tire Replacement

~4min read

1. Park on a level surface and firmly apply the parking brake.

2. Move the shift lever to R (Reverse) with a manual transmission, or P (Park) with an automatic transmission/dual clutch transmission.

3. Turn on the hazard warning flashers.

4. Remove the wheel nut wrench, jack, jack handle and spare tire from the vehicle.

5. Block the front and rear wheels diagonally opposite the jack position.

WARNING - Tire Replacement

  • To prevent the vehicle from moving during tire replacement, always apply the parking brake fully and always block the wheel diagonally opposite the one being replaced.
  • We recommend blocking the vehicle's wheels and not allowing anyone to remain in the vehicle while it is raised with the jack.

6. Loosen each wheel nut counterclockwise by one turn, but do not remove any nut until the tire is off the ground.

7. Place the jack at the front (1) or rear (2) jacking position closest to the tire you are replacing. Install the jack at the designated locations under the frame. The jacking positions are plates welded to the frame with two protrusions and an indexing point for the jack.

WARNING - Jack Position

To avoid injury, use only the jack supplied with the vehicle and in the correct jacking position; never use any other part of the vehicle to support the jack.

8. Insert the jack handle into the jack and turn it clockwise to raise the vehicle until the tire is off the ground. This distance is approximately 30 mm (1.2 in). Before removing the wheel nuts, make sure the vehicle is stable and there is no chance of movement or slipping.

9. Loosen the wheel nuts and remove them by hand. Pull the wheel off the studs and lay it flat so it cannot roll away. To install the wheel on the hub, lift the spare wheel, align the holes with the studs, and place the wheel onto them.

If this is difficult, tilt the wheel slightly and align the upper wheel hole with the upper stud. Then rock the wheel back and forth until it can be fitted over the other studs.

WARNING

Wheels and wheel covers may have sharp edges. Handle them carefully to avoid possible serious injury. Before installing the wheel, make sure there is nothing on the hub or wheel (such as dirt, resin, gravel, etc.) that prevents the wheel from seating flat against the hub.

If there is, remove it. If there is no proper contact at the mounting surface between the wheel and hub, the wheel nuts may loosen and the wheel may come off. Loss of a wheel may cause loss of vehicle control, resulting in serious injury or death.

10. To reinstall the wheel, hold it against the studs, place the wheel nuts on the studs, and tighten them by hand. Rock the tire to make sure it is fully seated, then tighten the nuts by hand again as far as possible.

11. Lower the vehicle to the ground by turning the wheel nut wrench counterclockwise.

Then position the wrench as shown in the illustration and tighten the wheel nuts. Make sure the socket is fully seated on the nut. Do not stand on the wrench handle or use an extension tube on the wrench handle. Tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern, every other nut, until all of them are tightened. Then check the tightness of each nut twice. After replacing a wheel, we recommend having the system checked at an authorized Kia dealer.

Wheel nut tightening torque:

Steel wheel and aluminum alloy wheel: 11~13 kgf·m (79~94 lbf·ft)

If you have a tire pressure gauge, remove the valve cap and check the air pressure. If the pressure is lower than recommended, drive slowly to the nearest service station and inflate to the correct pressure. If it is too high, release air until it is correct. Always install the valve cap after checking or adjusting tire pressure. If the cap is not installed, air may leak from the tire. If you lose the valve cap, buy a new one and install it as soon as possible.

After replacing the wheel, always secure the flat tire in its place and return the jack and tools to their proper storage locations.

CAUTION

Your vehicle has metric threads on the wheel studs and wheel nuts. When removing a wheel, make sure the same nuts are reinstalled, or, when replacing a nut, use one with metric threads and the same seat configuration. Installing a non-metric nut on a metric stud, or vice versa, will not properly secure the wheel to the hub and will damage the stud. Damaged studs must be replaced.

Note that most lock nuts do not have metric threads. Be sure to carefully check the thread type before installing wheel nuts or wheels. If in doubt, we recommend contacting an authorized Kia dealer.

WARNING - Wheel Studs

If the studs are damaged, they may lose the ability to hold the wheel. This may result in loss of the wheel and a serious collision with injury.

To prevent the jack, jack handle, wheel nut wrench, socket, and spare tire from rattling while the vehicle is moving, store them properly.

WARNING - Insufficient Spare Tire Pressure

Check the inflation pressure as soon as possible after installing the spare tire. If necessary, adjust it to the specified pressure. Refer to Chapter 9, Tires and Wheels.
