Driving Your Vehicle

VSM Operation

~2min read

When VSM is operating, the ESC indicator () flashes.

When the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system is operating normally, you may feel a slight pulsation in the vehicle and/or abnormal steering reactions (EPS - Electronic Power Steering). This is only the effect of the brake and the EPS controls and does not indicate anything abnormal.

VSM does not operate when:

  • Driving on a sloped road, such as a grade or incline
  • Driving in reverse
  • The ESC OFF indicator light () remains on the instrument panel
  • The EPS indicator light remains on. Instrument cluster

VSM operation is turned off

If you press the ESC OFF button to turn off ESC, VSM is also cancelled and the ESC OFF indicator light () will illuminate.

To turn on VSM, press the button again. The ESC OFF indicator will turn off.

WARNING - Vehicle Stability Control

Drive carefully even if your vehicle is equipped with the Vehicle Stability Management system. It can only help you maintain control under certain circumstances.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp

VSM may be deactivated even if you have not cancelled VSM operation by pressing the ESC OFF button. This indicates that a malfunction has been detected somewhere in the Electronic Power Steering or VSM system. If the ESC indicator light () or the EPS warning light remains on, take the vehicle to an authorized Kia dealer and have the system inspected.

✽ NOTICE

  • VSM is designed to operate at speeds above approximately 22 km/h on curves.
  • VSM is designed to operate at speeds above approximately 10 km/h when braking on a split-mu surface. A split-mu surface consists of two surfaces that have different friction levels.

• The Vehicle Stability Management system does not replace safe driving practices; it is an additional function only. It is the driver's responsibility to always check speed and distance to the vehicle ahead. Always hold the steering wheel firmly while driving.

• Your vehicle is designed to be operated by the driver, even with VSM installed. Always follow all normal precautions for driving at speeds safe for conditions, including driving in inclement weather and on slippery roads.

WARNING

For maximum protection, always fasten your seat belts. No system, regardless of how advanced, can compensate for all driver errors and/or driving conditions. Always drive responsibly.
