~4min read

Operating Condition

This system will activate when the indicator on the rear parking assist OFF button

This system is activated when the indicator on the rear parking assist system OFF button is not illuminated. If you want to deactivate the rear parking assist system, press the rear parking assist system OFF button again. (The indicator on the button will illuminate.) To activate the system, press the button again. (The indicator on the button will go off.)

If the vehicle is driven at a speed above 3 mph (5 km/h), the system may not activate correctly.

The detection distance when the rear parking assist system is operating is approximately 47 inches (120 cm).

If more than two objects are detected simultaneously, the nearest object will be recognized first.

Types of Warning Sounds

  • When an object is located 47 to 24 inches (120 to 61 cm) from the rear bumper: the buzzer sounds intermittently.
  • When an object is located 24 to 12 inches (60 to 31 cm) from the rear bumper: the buzzer sounds more frequently.
  • When an object is within 12 inches (30 cm) of the rear bumper: the buzzer sounds continuously.

Rear Parking Assist System Malfunction Conditions

The rear parking assist system may not operate properly if:

1. Moisture has frozen on the sensor. (It will operate normally once the moisture has been removed.)

2. The sensor is covered with foreign matter such as snow or water, or the sensor cover is blocked. (It will operate normally once the material is removed or the sensor is no longer blocked.)

3. Driving on rough road surfaces (unpaved roads, gravel, bumps, slopes).

4. Objects creating excessive noise (car horns, loud motorcycle engines, or truck air brakes) are within the sensor range.

5. Heavy rain or water spray.

6. Wireless transmitters or mobile phones are within the sensor range.

7. The sensor is covered with snow.

8. Towing a trailer.

The detection range may decrease if:

1. The sensor is contaminated with foreign matter such as snow or water. (Detection range will return to normal once removed.)

2. The outside air temperature is very high or low.

The sensor may not detect the following objects:

1. Sharp or thin objects such as ropes, chains, or small poles.

2. Objects that can absorb the sensor frequency, such as clothing, sponge materials, or snow.

3. Undetectable objects less than 40 inches (1 m) high and less than 6 inches (14 cm) in diameter.

Rear Parking Assist System Precautions

  • The rear parking assist system may sound intermittently depending on the vehicle speed and the shape of the detected objects.
  • The rear parking assist system may malfunction if the vehicle bumper height or sensor installation has been changed or damaged. Any non-factory equipment or accessories may also affect sensor operation.
  • The sensor may not detect objects within 15 in. (40 cm) of the sensor, or it may indicate an incorrect distance. Use caution.
  • If the sensor is frozen or contaminated with snow, dirt, or water, the sensor may not operate until the material is removed with a soft cloth.
  • Do not press, scratch, or strike the sensor. Damage to the sensor may occur.

WARNING

Be especially careful when the vehicle approaches objects on the road, especially pedestrians, and especially children. Keep in mind that some objects may not be detected by the sensors due to the distance, size, or material of the object, all of which may limit the effectiveness of the sensors. Always perform a visual inspection to make sure the vehicle is clear of all obstacles before moving the vehicle in any direction.

✽ NOTICE

This system can detect objects only within the range and location of the sensors. It cannot detect objects in other areas where sensors are not installed. In addition, small or thin objects, such as poles or objects located between the sensors, may not be detected by the sensors. Always visually check the area behind the vehicle when reversing. Be sure to inform drivers of vehicles who may be unfamiliar with the system about the capabilities and limitations of the system.

Self-Diagnosis

If you do not hear the warning sound, or the buzzer sounds intermittently when shifting into R (Reverse), this may indicate a malfunction in the rear parking assist system. In this case, have your vehicle checked by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.

WARNING

The new vehicle warranty does not cover accidents, vehicle damage, or passenger injuries resulting from a malfunction of the rear parking assist system. Always drive safely and carefully.
